As a Brit, I would suggest this will be more about self-justification and indoctrination
For context, they are panicking over the new governments statements over their "TV Tax" (the licence fee) funding model.
Basically, the BBC is paid for by a licence fee that every household has to pay (if you have a TV) enforceable by law (people have been put in jail for TV tax evasion).
This sudden push looks to me like they are trying to justify their worth as a public service, all very transparent and childish.
Of course. I forgot they want to come out of this looking like indispensable hero's since their popularity is in freefall after charging over 75s to watch TV and being filmed trying to fraudulently "Me too" Tommy Robinson amongst many other things.
The same broadcaster that was allowed to have the first openly racist hiring practices, banning non ethnic minorities from applying.
The same broadcaster who has frequently re written history in its existing online education sections to inject diversity into historical Britain and the Romans, making leaders and people in power black.
The same broadcaster that has a no white males in lead positions policy for its TV dramas and where every drama has to show a mixed race couple as main characters.
