Armchair political theorists think that Trump puts a lot of emphasis on protecting farmers since they're mainly white people who strongly tend to support him politically. However, the president understands the bigger mechanisms at play, which are the same mechanisms understood and utilized by the Chinese state.
The men in power in China would like to hinder American economic might, and harming our agricultural sector is the most direct and simple way to do that. With thoughtful preparation and a few right moves, they can seriously harm a specific part of our ag industry. For example, they could spend a few years buying a shit load of American wheat, and then suddenly cut that off which could cause the price to drop like a rock (many other international factors are in play, of course, but China is big enough to have a huge impact). This would not only hurt farmers, but have a huge impact on truckers. Putting great strain on transportation might seriously increase costs for our manufacturers who use the same trucking and logistics companies that access farms that are generally in rural places off the beaten track. Putting additional cost on our manufactured products will make us less competitive internationally, which is what the Chinese want.
Did Obama understand this? No. Did the big banks that ran Obama's administration understand this? Of course, but as proponents of TPP they literally didn't give a shit about US farmers or manufacturers. On the other hand, Trump both gets it and is personally invested in helping workers in our country.
In December 2000, William Jefferson Clinton publicly floated the idea that the USA should cease most farming and become a net importer of food, because third world countries could grow food cheaper and better . Plus that would give them more income without having to industrialize , so better for the environment. Anyone else remember that?
No, it's truly EVIL. WJC was many things, but he was not stupid ; he knew the USA becoming dependent on third world countries for food would weaken it, probably fatally and irrevocably.
I work for a wholesale greenhouse with our own trucking division. We are at war. Some states, like PA, have deemed garden centers as "non-essential". We've had to close our Pittsburgh warehouse. We've resorted to meeting wholesale customers in Wheeling and transferring product truck to truck Smokey and The Bandit style. Gardening has never been more essential. Do you trust lettuce coughed on by an illegal or lettuce grown in your own garden?
Who's downvoting you? We're getting closer, people, and only fools can deny it at this point. The President is doing everything he can, but at some point, your fates--and the fate of the country--is going to be in your own two damn hands.
I've told this to some peeps when the shopping chaos was going on; grow your own food where you can. Go the gardening section, it's the last place most people think about. Now is perfect growing season as well.
My daughter was commenting on how it's all the blue collar workers that are considered "essential". The truck drivers, farmers, grocery store stockers. Don't get me wrong, I know Drs and Nurses deserve a lot of credit too but, all these white collar workers are not even considered essential during a crisis.
Bro, I'm a doctor. I would be lost without my nurses. They are being laid off and furloughed at my hospital, and I'm still being paid. I'm not sure what fake news you're reading, but nurses are viewed as easily replaceable and doctors are treated like gods.
Then quit feeling sorry for yourself and be proud you are on the front lines. I wouldn't say this otherwise, but I am donating my salary to the nurse's union relief fund till this crap is over. So I am volunteering too, but unlike the nurses I have years of doctor's pay in the bank to get me through this.
Dude the nurses don’t need relief they’re making 7k a week - 364k a year. Much more than I’ve ever made. I’m calling your bluff dude - no way you’re a doctor. Most likely you’re a noctor.
I94 in this area has ALWAYS been loaded with trucks. When I was going to college in Hammond, I had to commute along this in my tiny car working around trucks that basically took over the right two lanes -- and that was 30 years ago. Hasn't changed much if not gotten more congested.
On a good note, at least somebody's working and moving freight!
Hi. Worst part of driving to Chicago is the Sign that says welcome to Illinois. Also Indianapolis wlll take your population now, and they will buy a handgun, also getting a lifetime to Cary permit. Boom.
I came here to say the same thing, it's a bottle neck beneath Lake Michigan. If you don't feel comfortable driving surrounded by tons of big rigs (like my dad, he had a lot of anxiety when surrounded by 18 wheelers), then avoid 294 between IN/IL, or go during off hours.
I was literally about to say this. This is just how it looks. 80/94 is the busiest truck traffic expressway in America because the lake funnels Illinois/Michigan/Wisconsin traffic through that corridor.
There probably was just construction or an accident causing a traffic backup.
Hoarders ruin everything. The grocery store supply chain is pretty darn complex. It's not as simple as calling Joe Farmer and saying "We need more eggs!"
The good news is, it will stabilize. Just when Dickforbrains decides that he has enough in his house.
Correct. We had two food supply chains. One, leading to restaraunts, was virtually abandoned overnight. The other, leading to grocery stores was faced with increased demand + short-term panic buying and hoarding.
It'll be a little later than that. On an almost state by state basis, the pattern has been roughly the same. Tp->sanatizer->canned goods->staples->meat->fresh foods. As each one of those disappeared, the warehouses emptied their reserves to restock. So, despite the initial panic buys/hoarding, shelves began to restock, usually with item limits. But this means everyone who didn't get those items on the first go-round are going to buy at an accelerated pace because unlike the horders who feared a shortage, they actually experienced it. And, now you have the horders who thought it would be a good idea to have "X" number of weeks of supplies are now at "X"-2 weeks of supplies, so they're re-upping as well.
All of this is well and good, and would level off fairly quickly except those who produce the supplies, those that transport it, and those that distribute it, (farmers/factory workers, truck drivers, grocers) are just as susceptible to illness as us, and, if they catch a cold, not even the chinese virus, just a cold, they get sidelined. Couple that with the CARES act, where if they got laid off, in MOST cases that would give them 39(?) weeks of the largest paychecks they've ever seen, and you have a recipe for a very long tem disruption in the supply chain.
calling Joe Farmer and saying "We need more eggs!"
Gotta get roosters to the hens, hatch those eggs, let the cute little chicks grow up... then you start getting more eggs. And turn those roosters into soup.
I think the pandemic will cause an abundance of obesity. I go to Walmart and it looks like Black Friday hit the shelves. People are hoarding stockpiles of food. Then they close the health clubs and gyms. They cancel all sports. My son’s spring tennis season looks shot. Then places like Minneapolis close all beaches and pools for the summer. So yep, people are eating way more and we will probably have a nation with 75 percent obesity by June.
I was thinking same thing. If I could meme, it'd be something like buff looking dude before pandemic, then fat ass with long uncut hair after pandemic.
My gym closed. I run and cycle 6 days a week, so I won't get fat. But, I am finding it hard to motivate myself to do basic strength exercises like pushups, pullups, crunches.
I even have a weight bench and some of those adjustable-weight dumbells that I haven't used in years. This is making us (me) lazy!
I'm gonna lift at my house this weekend! Might cancel the gym membership for good. Or, keep it so the gym doesn't go out of business? Aye carumba!
Just like there are no atheists in fox holes.there are no high speed rail advocates in logistical crisis. Tells you exactly how much "need" was there to begin with.
The Farmers, the truckers, the medical staff, the delivery guys - I hope Americans see it is not the Hollywood stars and politicians who are the heroes, but the American people everywhere that make this country run.
And I'm hoping more normies realize this. Celebrity culture is a disease, and God willing people will realize that they don't miss it, don't need it, and moreover, are better off without it!
Well, that's not a good idea! Don't they have access to slightly-less-dangerous purpose-designed "go-pills"? I mean, you can't daisy-chain those forever, either. At some point you just need to rest...
They call it the West Coast Turnaround.... Well, that's what Jim Croce called it. Roll on 18 Wheelers, but please be safe so you can make it home to your families too.

I like the truck driver's accent. Reminds me of SNL "da bears"
He's definitely a red-blooded, Patriotic America!
Me being from Chicago.
What accent?

That “idea” is truly retarded
Food production is a part of national security
No food no troops
No, it's truly EVIL. WJC was many things, but he was not stupid ; he knew the USA becoming dependent on third world countries for food would weaken it, probably fatally and irrevocably.
Imagine being this much of a worthless shit-stirring subhuman. We can't coexist with these slimeballs.

Apply for exemption from the shut down 👍
We did last week. It just came through. 👍
Excellent!

Don't get me wrong, I know Drs and Nurses deserve a lot of credit too but, all these white collar workers are not even considered essential during a crisis.
Bedside nurses are the blue collar of the medical world. They have white collar reaponsibilities and blue collar pay.
Nurses are getting offered 5000-13000 a week right now. Doctors are being asked to volunteer
Bro, I'm a doctor. I would be lost without my nurses. They are being laid off and furloughed at my hospital, and I'm still being paid. I'm not sure what fake news you're reading, but nurses are viewed as easily replaceable and doctors are treated like gods.

Don't forget us in air cargo. Shit is fuckin INSANE!!!! Fuckin work for me is non-stop high level stress. Its unreal.
We would be like that if china wasn't stinging us our components.
FedEx is fucked. 80% of our shipments are being returned cause businesses are closed.
Exactly- executives can stay home, but I work a blue-collar job. I am essential.
"Truckers are the blood in the veins of the body of America"

If we need one more, maybe we can DPA Bloomberg. He can do it easily
Or as Hillary likes to call them a basket of deplorables
That is every day on 94. Traffic blows on that road. It is jacked up from Torrence to 65. Mon thru Fri from 1pm to 5pm
I94 in this area has ALWAYS been loaded with trucks. When I was going to college in Hammond, I had to commute along this in my tiny car working around trucks that basically took over the right two lanes -- and that was 30 years ago. Hasn't changed much if not gotten more congested.

Yeah, it's always garbage down there. The worst part of driving south to Indy or beyond.
I would think the worst part of driving to Indy is that your destination is Indy.
Heyoooo, I kid
In all honesty, we're never driving to Indy, usually going to the east coast. :)
Hi. Worst part of driving to Chicago is the Sign that says welcome to Illinois. Also Indianapolis wlll take your population now, and they will buy a handgun, also getting a lifetime to Cary permit. Boom.

Crossroads of America
Not only do the major highways north, south, east and west converge, but the railroads do too.
I was literally about to say this. This is just how it looks. 80/94 is the busiest truck traffic expressway in America because the lake funnels Illinois/Michigan/Wisconsin traffic through that corridor.
There probably was just construction or an accident causing a traffic backup.
How the hell is there that much traffic now though with everything shut down?
God Bless America
Did we suddenly all start eating more or something wtf?
China's eating more bat, MSM is eating more crow.

Roosters deserve to be soup frankly.
Yep. Great soup, kind of rubbery eating.

Google "athlean-x perfect home workout". I've been doing since this all started and have made more progress than my previous gym weight workout.
I'm from this area, it just looks like this all the time. There was probably just a minor accident or construction
Eating More and Drinking More
THIS IS AMERICA! This made me tear up...Something mighty special about this thing called # THE AMERICAN SPIRIT!
I live near a busy road. I watch trucks go by all day long. I used to think nothing of it. Now I thank each driver for keeping the country running.
All these people are doing amazing work. Even the workers out there still maintaining roads.
And railroad workers too!
Just like there are no atheists in fox holes.there are no high speed rail advocates in logistical crisis. Tells you exactly how much "need" was there to begin with.
