Upvoted.

Nothing is adding up. We got Cali with infection spread slower ON THE WEST COAST while NY is seeing a parabolic rocket in infection spread, and their only excuse is deploying social distancing two days earlier than NYC. Right.

China had been sending infected since last year, I bet.

Numbers look staggering and instill panic when sample rate includes comorbidity, old age, and actual death not listed. Yes, the virus exists but not to the tune of decapitating our entire economy. We are fucked regardless of COVID19.

A few simple explanations for the slower spread in Cali:

  • We have better weather. People are less vulnerable when the weather is nice and mild instead of cold and rainy.
  • Our urban density is much lower, even in the biggest cities. Younger cities built much later in US history, means much more sprawl, and much lower concentration of people. Compare the high-rises around central park in NY, to the downtown of LA, worlds apart.

Also public transport is used routinely in NYC (commuter trains, subway). Many don’t even have a car. California has a personal car culture.

When most of your population crams into standing room only train cars twice per day with the general public it’s easy to see how this spreads like wildfire.

You’re going to have to explain Sweden and their low rates then, as they’ve kept the economy open...

NYC public transport. Sardine cans and crowded sidewalks

A very wealthy country with solid healthcare, and very segregated communities. Regular Swedes are getting the care they need. The poor brown people in the ghettoes are probably not even being counted.

That's a sound theory as well- I'll definitely look more into it!

I dunno about "panicking", but everything they've been doing sure has gotten the country REALLY prepared for a possible war with China. Think about it. They've called up all sorts of inactive reserves. They've got everything locked down. They've got the defense production act going. It's quite a bit of the things you'd want to get done before going to war. And mind you, going to war with a near-peer threat like China would be no easy task, and so you'd want everything possible to get mobilized and ready.

Previous was " if you are abroad, better think about coming home or sheltering in place."

This is a very different tone.

It's war. We'll get over it and come out the other side better than we went in.

3 phases of war: diplomatic, economics and armed conflict.

Wonder what phase we find ourselves in now?

Does Venezuela ramming a European cruise ship with a navy vessel - which then sunk (the Venezuelan navy ship, not the cruise ship) - count as armed conflict?

2
Fizbin7 2 points ago +2 / -0

Spastic idiots waving their arms and Wiley Coyote -ing themselves doesn’t count as WW4.

WW3 was of course fought back in January.

Did anyone bother to look at the official State Department web page?

I did...

The Department of State advises U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19. In countries where commercial departure options remain available, U.S. citizens who live in the United States should arrange for immediate return to the United States, unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period. At present the Department of State is making every effort to assist U.S. citizens overseas who wish to return to the United States. As the Covid-19 situation develops, our ability to provide such assistance working with commercial airlines or arranging for evacuation flights may become more limited or even unavailable. In recent weeks, commercial airlines have significantly reduced flight schedules and countries have closed airports and borders with little advance notice. If you wish to return to the United States, you should make arrangements to do so now and contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate for assistance as needed. There is no guarantee that the Department of State will be able to continue to provide repatriation assistance and transportation options to the United States may be unavailable in the future. If you choose to remain overseas, you should be prepared to remain where you are for the foreseeable future.

So, they are advising that you make arrangements while you still can, because it is likely that a flight may not be available as airlines cancel flights to cut costs during the downturn, etc.

Most likely indicates all international travel will be shut down completely shorty. The pieces are in place for it, they got a bailout for the airlines. The State department telling you to get out NOW lends to that. They are arranging flights to get people home, they have been for a while, but this will be your last chance to get home or you will be stuck where you are shortly.

Have a friend in the foreign service who has been working on this all week.

Can confirm. They are pulling all stops to help Americans get home before travel bans and quarantines lock everyone wherever they are.

Somethings gunna happen. Never have seen them say something like this before... get home or don't beg us to let you in when it hits the fan.

I am amusing myself by observing everything happening as if it was a playthrough of Plague Inc.

Yep. Not too much longer and we'll have this thing defeated.

2
LostViking1985 2 points ago +3 / -1

Right? It doesn't have enough DNA points yet to evolve into something serious, and we're already shutting down movement! Haha.
