sentience is not a requirement to be a form of 'life'. a virus can be considered a parasite since it needs a host to stay alive and replicate. it has a genome. it is not sentient, more like a very basic biological machine.
a virus can 'evolve' via natural selection. viruses that have a certain gene configuration that can either survive longer while airborne, or is compatible with more human cells, or is more resistant to more chemicals (including antiviral medication) has a greater chance of survival.
you ask why a virus even exists? why do YOU exist?
