You don't release info when you're in the military unless it has been approved through the chain of command.

Can confirm. There is a chain of command for a reason as well as a press corps. A commander breaking ranks and running to the press is strictly forbidden. You may think it's trivial, but imagine something like this during a conflict. Morale and need to know are important considerations.

He could have sent the message in a secure way in the chain of command. Instead, he chose to CC numerous people in an unclassified normal email; and then it leaked. The Navy is saying that he chose to act unprofessionally when they needed him to act professionally. That’s what I get out of it. Maybe one day we’ll get the entire story.
