If Trump did something like this, the left would scream "See - He's A Dictator!".

Cuomo does this and "He's such a strong and inspiring leader!"

8
Keiichi81 8 points ago +8 / -0

But up to 60% of New Yorkers could be infected within 2 weeks! Says who? Says Cuomo! So clearly you can see that they're in desperate need and Cuomo is justified to demand tens of thousands of spare ventilators. (You know, rather than hundreds of thousands of doses of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin to keep people from ever reach the point where they need a ventilator, because Democrats and the MSM can't propagandize "people recovering at home with mild symptoms" the way they can "rows of people on ventilators waiting to die in hospitals.")

20
nocucks 20 points ago +20 / -0

The ventilator shortage has never ever made sense. Even if those numbers were needed, getting them is of little use because there are not enough doctors to even run the ones they already had. Nobody is talking about the doctor shortage because the AMA is a powerful lobby and their number 1 focus for 50 years has been limiting the number of spots in medical schools to limit the number of doctors and keep doctor salaries high.

Nobody wants to piss off doctors right now, but this crisis (and really the entire healthcare cost crisis) is a direct result of the AMA lobbying hard to ensure supply of doctors is kept artificially low. Its the same shit OPEC does with oil. Cut supply to ensure high prices.

5
Mexicola1976 5 points ago +5 / -0

16
Mark2 16 points ago +21 / -5

You misunderstand the point. Prices and markets allow for an efficient distribution of resources to where they are most needed and to where people are willing to pay the price. There is a world in which profitability aligns with the crisis and, in fact signals to other producers to enter the market, thereby increasing supply.

Here's a good article that explains some of the economics of it. https://www.econlib.org/price-signals-price-gouging-and-philanthropy/

7

5
Mark2 5 points ago +5 / -0

That's a fair argument. But then simply block exports.

Edit: Also, I'm not going to say that life in any other part of the world is worth more or less than this part. I say, let markets make that determination through price.

1
TruthHunter 1 point ago +1 / -0

Does that still make sense if other world players are not playing fair? Here is a hypothetical: China knew they'd catch us with our pants down. They buy up supplies anticipating a critical time window. This causes irreparable damage to us in that critical window. I could say we made our bed with negligent preparation (Oh lord is that a big topic). I can also say there is a place for Govt to mitigate predatory capital manipulation.

-4
deleted -4 points ago +4 / -8
7
Mark2 7 points ago +7 / -0

That's an oddly hostile and ineffectual defense. Because we're not a completely free-market as it is, then we ought to give up on it completely? We are a mixed economy, true, but that's an argument for less regulation, not for more. It's ludicrous that you really think 3M is the only company that can produce this stuff.

What would cause producers to drop heavy capital (doubtful it's that significant) to make products in demand? Would a profitable model, perhaps, signal to them that it's a good product to produce?

0
deleted 0 points ago +2 / -2
2
Mark2 2 points ago +2 / -0

There are companies. The MyPillow guy said he was entering the market and retooling his factories. As profits rise, there will be more. This whole process is how the market flushes it out. It's not instantaneous. Not even Trump can make this happen instantly.

It may seem distasteful to you, but that doesn't change it's effectiveness. We ultimately rely on the self-interest of 3M and other companies to produce the products we need. Why would we punish the very self-interest that serves our interest?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kQuW9K9bt0

2
JGirl 2 points ago +2 / -0

3M's self-interest had them selling to foreigners over filling Floridian orders.

1
SpiceMustFlow 1 point ago +1 / -0

That position is fine to take.

But given that you’re trying to rationalize the current situation you need to further explain why it’s appropriate for the government to subjectively give NYC far far more resources than the country on average will have to deal with the same crisis.

We have spent weeks talking about inadequate preparation and now suddenly the areas which have had time to prepare suddenly need to suffer?!

And why? Because the same politicians you are complaining about in terms of bailouts are suddenly supposed to be trusted to distribute supplies?!?!? Please.

7
InTheArmsOfThePepe 7 points ago +7 / -0

Yeah. I have mixed feelings about Trump invoking the DPA here. If a state that didn't prepare for anything finds itself SOL, why should private enterprise be forced to take one on the chin?

"But they're loaded, they can afford it!"

Ehh, that's not the point. Remember that little thing called freedom? Called liberty?

Yeah, someone else's failure should not FORCE another party's downfall or loss of property.

But, hell, we're already neck deep in wealth redistribution. We've shat all over the Constitution and BoR so much already, what's one more squat, eh?

Makes me sick.

5
Mark2 5 points ago +5 / -0

I'm seeing the same attitude with my interactions "we've already gone this far, who cares at this point?!"

What's sad is that the things these policies are supposed to do, end up doing the opposite. Liberty has proven to be the best structure of solving these kinds issues.

I'm very disappointed about all if it, tbh. Politics as usual, I guess.

2
InTheArmsOfThePepe 2 points ago +2 / -0

I'm very disappointed about all if it, tbh. Politics as usual, I guess.

Yeah, I hear you u/Mark2 ! We're dying by a thousand cuts here.

I'm getting really tired of hearing the good guys keep excusing these decisions with, "Welp, we need the other side's votes after all... Maybe next time, champ."

I'm sorry, but what?

In what universe will the libtards ever quit trying to advance their agenda? Am I supposed to sit here and hope that "next time" they'll happily concede without a fight?

"Well, what else would you suggest we do? Let the country go into a free fall? You gotta compromise."

Ehh, but to what extent? At this point we're not quibbling about minor differences of opinion, but face EXTREME variances in not only our beliefs, but in the overall path our country should be taking. What if we have literal traitors within our midst within the higher echelons of government, bought and paid for by another country's coin? We just keep finding that middle ground of go along to get along?

What ever happened to ACTUAL patriotic duty? Like Civil War time leadership that cut off traitors at the quick?

Or am I overlooking something here? Oversimplifying the matter?

Maybe in some ways I've answered my own question. This type of betrayal and mixed influence has "always" been around and will likely always be here. I feel like I'm on the "right side" of the matter, but what about my fellow countryman who feels the same about his beliefs? Do I really want these matters resolved by threat of force and bloodshed?

But there again, that's me being rational and thoughtful. While the "other side" has Antifa and the like who act first and think never...

Oh well, sorry I got long-winded there.

No, I am not joking. Here is an economic article about how pricing works. A free-market is fundamentally agile and quick to adapt, when pricing acts as a signal these issues flush themselves out and there's not need for a central planner.

5

I thought the left was against authoritarianism

Authoritarianism is a left wing concept. There is no such thing as right wing authoritarianism, because the farthest right you can go is anarchy.

Hitler, Stalin, Mao - They're all Left wing. Fascism is left wing. Communism is left wing.

Liberty is a right wing concept.

-1
spezisacuckold -1 points ago +2 / -3

True communism which is a far left as you get is 100% voluntary so I don't know what you're smoking.

It may be imperfect, but the Political Compass is decently accurate in portraying the bounds of political ideology.

2
SpiceMustFlow 2 points ago +2 / -0

This is really simple. There’s no such thing as true communism because there’s no such thing as a fully compliant or fully voluntary workforce.

NY Gov. Cuomo Rejected Buying Recommended 16,000 Ventilators in 2015 for Pandemic, Established Death Panels and Lottery Instead

Cuomo spent more money than the cost of the ventilators on a solar panel boondoggle, reports former New York Lieutenant Governor Betsy McCaughey (R) in a syndicated column published this past week. McCaughey reports the Cuomo administration decided instead to establish “triage officers” to decide in a crisis who would get a ventilator and who would be left to die.

It has also been reported a ventilator lottery would be an option in a pandemic crisis. Now with the COVID-19 Chinese coronavirus overwhelming New York hospitals, Cuomo is begging for ventilators.

While you're waiting to see if you qualify for the New York hydroxychloroquine trial, you can pass the time reading Cuomo's 272 page Ventilator Allocation Guidelines to see why you don't qualify for a ventilator, either.

They told them to inventory what they had in their states. They are supposed to use that first to meet the needs. The Federal gov is trying to boost production so the states can acquire more and are holding what they have on hand to try to help with any shortfalls.

I don't know why they had to make a big dramatic thing out of it. Is he taking the ventilators off of one set of patients to put them on another? I didn't read that. It is just common sense to use the things where they need them instead of letting them sit where they aren't used or needed. That is the whole idea of using the data to supply with is about.

4
ProdigalPlaneswalker 4 points ago +4 / -0

He's manufacturing a crisis via artificial scarcity.

1
Mother_of_gains 1 point ago +2 / -1

This. I said Trump needed to ask him for a state inventory before he delivered any new ventilators.

If Cuomo can't keep track of the existing ventilators in his bullshit state, why the fuck would you waste any more on him?

The state of New York is enormous, and most of it hasn't been touched by this virus yet.

You're telling me Cuomo can't rustle up ventilators in his state from hospitals with unused capacity? That's kind of his job as governor.

If you were in Cuomo's shoes and your goal was to be an effective leader and come up with an actual fucking solution to get the ventilators you need when there's none available, what would you do? Would beg others to do your job like he's currently doing or would you look for an alternative answer as begging like a bitch isn't going to get you anywhere?
