They used to

What’s happened now is, as an example:

Imagine some moneyed heir/heiress has been running around, being a total lying, thieving, rapey sack of shit. Takes what he wants, but not in a skillful way, but rather in an entitled needy doesn’t-really-understand-anything-about-anything kind of way. He’s gotten out of trouble narrowly 100 times because his most well-developed skill is appearing like he is legit, with his good vocabulary, fancy clothes and expensive orthodontics. People basically know he’s a snake, but it hasn’t meaningfully affected them.

But then he finally gets in trouble, big trouble, with the law. He’s finally been exposed. Say he/she raped or killed someone and got caught.

Suddenly, the lies don’t work. The skills suddenly don’t matter. They’ve been exposed.

What that doesn’t mean is they’ve suddenly learned how to skillfully control the narrative. They’re used to just throwing temper tantrums until everyone tires of their shit and just forgets about it, ships them off to rehab or whatever.

This is the current state of the “establishment.” They are the whiny heir/heiress that just doesn’t understand why things aren’t the same after they’re exposed. Their temper tantrums don’t work, their connections can’t save them, they are so panicked and they have no idea what to do or why their old tricks only convince their oldest “friends” — but even those people are starting to realize that they’re fucked.

This is obviously reductionist, but at least you can visualize the spoiled brat who is finally on the hook for something in front of everyone, sitting in the police station, throwing temper tantrums and JUST DOESN’T GET IT. Everything they do just makes it worse.
