It is not a ship's Commander's duty to be best friends with his crew!

IlxTheGreat -5 points ago +2 / -7

No, it's his duty to ensure the operational capability of the ship. Now when you have 9 cases of a virus become 100 cases in a week, on a ship with 3500 sailors, and you're at sea and told to remain at sea for the rest of a 60 day cruise, it doesn't take a genius to work out the math to see you cannot remain at sea. If you expect me to believe that the Admiral on board the ship was unaware of sailors with Covid 19 when he receives a daily report telling him that exactly, I've got a bridge for sale in Arizona, along with some Ocean Front Property.

What is your responsibility when the chain of command fails to deal with the problem? Ever deal with that? I have. Had to go over the head of 3 people to get the proper response. Did it cost me? Sure, did I care? Not a whit or a whittle. But there was 19 million$ that wasn't wasted because of it. Also, the Gen knew when I said I was going to do something, it was going to happen. W/O fail. Mission First, safely. When the chain of command fails, and it has, often lately, you have to take them to task.

So when you went over the heads of 3 people, did you deliberately email classified information to a slew of unrelated people, carefully worded for optimal media leakage, about the operational capabilities of a multi-billion dollar asset?

There is evidence that the Navy was in the process of dealing with the situation, and he had access to people higher on the chain of command if there was a serious issue. Instead he blabbed it out for media consumption and told every unfriendly nation that one of our military assets might not be operating at full capacity. That is not mission first or safety first.

So a "For Official Use Only" Classification leak should be grounds for treason? I'd like to direct your attention to the following websites: Dod.gov, FBI.gov, Senate.gov, etc,,,all of which have information with that classification still on them available on their sites...and have had them on their sites for decades. Do I approve? No, the information should have been declassified, and the classification removed, or never published. Want some real juicy stuff, look into the Copyright files. There's stuff there that should be classified and isn't. Our entire intelligence system is out of wack since the 60's. (First time I stumbled on classified docs in a library of all places.) Treason, is defined as an act against the good of your country. This guy didn't publish it. Isn't accused of publishing it, or helping get it published. Point the finger at the right guy or gal whoever leaked the info to the SF Chronicle. Even then, nothing will happen. Too many idiots that have already done the same thing with impunity.

I was also watching videos about how aircraft carriers are difficult to track with missiles because they always keep moving and such so their exact location is always hard to determine.

I guess we'll find out what the effect of this is if we get news of any movement from other countries or submarines sneaking through the area.

Rubbish. I was stationed on a carrier. I was on lookout when I spotted a sub (turned out to be Russian) in our wake. Bow mounted sonar isn't worth a shit about that. The enemy knows where we're at. Don't fool yourself.

Astounding the number of people that just don't seem to understand.

Not really. People understand, but for the last odd 32 years schools have been compromised from K-College. It's really no wonder America is a shade of what it could have been.

Its the sentiment angle that triggers the gut "how dare they" reaction . "oh he's just really concerned about his men, how cruel!"

Yep. Prior service Army here. I would have been in DEEP SHIT if I tried to do ANYTHING like this. There is a chain of command for a reason. This asshat wants his 15 minutes of fame is all

Ex-Navy here: You are so right, Satellite. People who have never been in service do not understand the chain of command. The unbelievable freedoms in the country have contributed to the ever-growing nonchalance of the citizenry—their demand for COMPLETE TRANSPARENCY, and the belief they actually KNOW BETTER than professionals in areas of which they have ZERO understanding. They DO NOT KNOW, but their liberal arrogance also demands they can never admit it.

The thing is we don't know what actual damage he caused if this was done intentionally. Did the group had to avert an operation or did someone get away because this happened?

Satellite 11 points ago +13 / -2

We do know what damage was caused. Did the wu flu damage your critical thinking? "Hey enemies of our country, were ill prepared! Nows the time!" Now drink water.

I don't know what's with the hostile reply. I don't think I even implied that he should have been left off the hook. What I was saying was he could have done this to warn some enemy assets or to avert an operation that they were doing.

The timing is rather odd if it was intentional. He could have done more damage later down the line if things escalated.

2
Yawnz13 2 points ago +4 / -2

I don't think anyone is even implying it was intentional. The guy was probably a softy. It probably made boring routine duty more tolerable, but he clearly lacked the discipline to not get too emotional over his crew being impacted.

ryvrdrgn14 18 points ago +18 / -0

If the crew was happy with how their captain acted, then the Navy better assign their toughest captain there to right that ship.

2
Blaer 2 points ago +2 / -0

yeah that was prob what bothered me the most, the crew was cheering for the guy that endangered their ship.

that is not something you want to see encouraged in the military.

The one thing that has been neglected in regard to reporting of this story is that the CAPT of the TR allowed his crew to have liberty ashore during a 5 day port call in DaNang Vietnam. What idiot allows his crew to go ashore while a pandemic is going on and said pandemic came out of the country just right next door?

Be3Al2Si6O18 11 points ago +11 / -0

An idiot that deserves to be drummed out.

The OPSEC compromise alone is more than just a fuck-up. Some very scary people are grilling this moron over an open flame right now.

IlxTheGreat 6 points ago +6 / -0

Now this, right here is the biggest problem. Should have been kept at sea the entire deployment.

BuckyKatt60 1 point ago +1 / -0

Interesting thing is the Bunker Hill was also in DaNang but apparently didn't have any #CCPVirus issues. Things that make you go Hmmmmm. Well the Bunker Hill skipper may have just earned himself a promotion to captaining a Aircraft Carrier!

1
IlxTheGreat 1 point ago +1 / -0

Geez, just read the ships article. They didn't land there until 5 March 20. Can you imagine taking liberty there? 6 cases of Covid 19 and Capt grants liberty. Yeah, good call. just an fyi, the Bunker Hill has Covid 19 warnings listed on the ships site. Wonder about the TR.

Vietnam isn’t testing for Covid-19. They can’t afford the test kits so any published case numbers are just the very tippy top of the iceberg and not reflective of what’s really going on.

Space_Force 10 points ago +10 / -0

Letting Chy-na know that we are now substantially less combat effective in their neck of the woods is beyond reckless and short-sighted. I get it, he was trying to protect his sailors but he should not have leaked it to the press. Thanks to his carelessness, the whole world knows that an entire US carrier battle group is out of commission. The Captain is lucky if he only looses his job.
