There are studies of the effectiveness of various textiles. 100% cotton in a dense weave is pretty darn good. People make them with a pocket, then cut HEPA filter to fit. It is possible to make excellent home made masks. The worst of them cut transmission by 50% which adds up if everyone wears them.
