We have done plenty of trials to test Hydroxychloriquine to know it's effective at treating this with minimal downside risk.

Why are we still being quarantined and restricted from working?

Why wasn't H1N1, with its higher death toll, treated like the apocalypse?

The media attitude toward Obama vs Trump is the difference.

Staatssicherheit -6 points ago +3 / -9

Maybe H1N1 didn't have a higher death toll. I'm seeing estimated numbers all the time instead of actual numbers.

How many people do you know got the swine flu back in 2009? I can tell you I already know people who got this coronavirus. Do you?

Killerbanana16 12 points ago +12 / -0

My entire family had the swine flu, along with 60 million other americans

1
Staatssicherheit 1 point ago +4 / -3

Was there an outbreak in your community? Did anyone die from it?

I personally didn't know anyone who contracted the swine flu much less die from it.

3
SwampSwan 3 points ago +3 / -0

I had it, and yes I took the 'vaccine' because my hospital requires it every year.

It was a particularly bad flu (in my experience) but I'd only caught flu 3 or 4 times in my life. The first time was 1978, and 2009 was just like the '78 flu I had.

In '78, my Mom treated me at home. In '09, I had to go to a Dr because my hospital req'd verification for sick time (as well as a return-to-work pass once you've healed, which is a PITA.)

In '09, I was given Tamiflu along with some codeine cough syrup. Had a horrendous allergic reaction to one or the other, looked like Martin Short in 'Pure Luck' https://youtu.be/ZaalgYGi3iQ?t=177 so now I don't take either drug.

Same year, we had a 17 yr old healthy male patient who died from it. Also a very young patient (whom I was not involved with but if memory serves it was a female around 4 or 5) who died of it.

My grandchild was 4 at the time, and he got it pretty severely. Several other family members had it, but not as badly for whatever reason.

Yes, it swept thru our community and many co-workers caught it. It really made the rounds in our hospital and the community at large.

I don't know anybody with WuFlu.

My point, though, is very simple. When Obama was in charge, the media remained calm and circumspect if not outright disconnected (re epidemics/pandemics etc.). With Trump in charge they are whipping up mass hysteria.

I could post dozens of similar articles; this is just a sample.

Based on swine flu figures, the coronavirus hysteria ...

https://powderedwigsociety.com/coronahoax/

CDC estimates that swine flu infected nearly 61 million people in the United States and caused 12,469 deaths. Worldwide, up to 575,400 people died from pandemic swine flu, compared to less than 5,000 for coronavirus. Yet, the hysteria the media has created over coronavirus makes it more feared in the public than bubonic plague.

2
Staatssicherheit 2 points ago +4 / -2

The media absolutely shilled for Obama.

Your link says the coronavirus is a hoax. Do you personally think covid is a hoax?

6
Thenew23rd 6 points ago +6 / -0

No that's absolutely not what it says.

Based On Swine Flu Figures, The Coronavirus Hysteria Appears To Be A Massive Political Hoax.

Yes, I believe the hysteria is a hoax.

0
Staatssicherheit 0 points ago +2 / -2

Fair point. So you do believe the death numbers being reported. You think this is a political hoax, not an actual hoax. Your link doesn't.

UPDATE (3/16/2020): Next, watch for the “reported” numbers of those infected and those dead by coronavirus to rise dramatically, throwing more gasoline on the hysteria fire.

6
Thenew23rd 6 points ago +6 / -0

No, it's not a "fair point." It's correcting the 100% false statement you made.

As for reported deaths, right now the totals remain in dispute.

'H1N1 virus was more deadly thanCoronavirus' - Medical News ...

https://www.medicalnewspk.com/h1n1-virus-was-more-deadly-than-coronavirus/

Today, the whole world appears to be in the grip of a new deadly disease." "The coronavirus emerged from China. It has rapidly spread all over the world and has become a worldwide pandemic causing more than 24000 confirmed cases and has resulted in approximately 490 deaths in China.

-1
DisgustedByMisleadia -1 points ago +1 / -2

This article is dated February 8, 2020.

A lot has changed since then.

2
Thenew23rd 2 points ago +2 / -0

One problem I've encountered is that many articles written to compare H1N1 to WuFlu are directly motivated by the desire to make Trump look terrible. So the writers play games with statistics and reliable info is difficult to get.

One of the biggest changes from Feb to now is treatment. Governments have [dragged kicking and screaming, it seems to me] begun increasingly to use malaria treatments on patients with excellent results. Afaik, that would result in a lower mortality rate for April than for Feb.

But my underlying point is valid regardless. The media downplayed every crisis for Obama and is whipping up mass hysteria right now. The difference is Trump, and the media's pathological hatred of him and desire to harm him.

-2
DisgustedByMisleadia -2 points ago +1 / -3

Yes, the Misleadia (see my username) is trying to use this as a bludgeon against Trump. And they would be wearing Obama-monogrammed kneepads and slobbering all over him.

But, none of that makes this epidemic any less serious. Obama fiddling while the H1N1 epidemic burned does not justify Trump doing the same thing.

2
Thenew23rd 2 points ago +2 / -0

It's mindboggling that you have bought the leftist narrative. I wouldn't have expected to see that here.

0
DisgustedByMisleadia 0 points ago +1 / -1

I haven't bought any narrative. I figured it out on my own, by looking at the data.

What is mind boggling to me is how many here are openly advocating the violation of public health orders. It's a violation of rule #2 in the sidebar.

If you don't think they are legal, ask a lawyer. There are clear legal precedents, upheld by SCOTUS. The federal government is limited to interstate and international orders, but the state's power is determined by their state constitution and regulations. You can find a summary of the various states here:

https://www.ncsl.org/research/health/state-quarantine-and-isolation-statutes.aspx

gobbledygook -16 points ago +1 / -17

Like I said, trouble with critical thinking skills, and no copy/paste quote will change that. h1n1 had an R 0 of 1.4-1.6, corona has an estimated R 0 between 3 and 6 (still calculating). This is why it’s being handled differently. Really not big brain stuff.. maybe for you it is, though.

You're the one with critical thinking problems. The original claim was that H1N1 was more lethal. You start railing about contagiousness and insulting people. That's a red herring, backed up by personal attacks. The contagiousness of the Chinese virus means nothing unless it's tied to some harm, in particular, it's lethality, which you never do.

Public policy should not be made on the basis of contagiousness per se. Why is this a hard point for you to grasp?

It's ineffective because nobody with a brain blames Trump for it. Even most Democrats recognize that it's not his fault. Instead, his poll numbers are rising because he's showing real leadership during a worldwide crisis.

NWO obstruction, just remember every day we are closer to the end of it. Trump will see us through and after that it’s go time baby. The Dems have been clearly outed as CCP shills and the CCP outed as the new global enemy. Not only WWIII but multiple civil wars/unrests are on the way and nationalism not CCP/NWO funded globalism will come out victorious.

5
ilovemyprez 5 points ago +5 / -0

Certainly Democrats are going to want to extend the shut down as much as they can. At a reasonable point we the people may have to shut certain Democrat's ideas down. Ideally between now and then we need to learn to organize and how to recall these uncaring Democrats. They only care about money and power. That point is not here yet. But it is coming somewhere at the end of April or middle of May. If the Democrats resist it may not be pretty. It is currently a matter of numbers. Right now there is plenty more virus. When it truly peaks then we can truly start arguing with the quarantine. Meanwhile find some way to work at home from home or such.

trump won't force people to take the drug because his approach from day one has been states first with federal government in support

he takes away the restrictions, the states have to decide for themselves what to do

if trump explicitly orders the use of a drug then he will be dragged over the coals for every death and side effect

Also remember that you can get quinine easily. It is in tonic water available at grocery stores and bars. In bars it is referred to as 'bitters'. It tastes like the white part of a grapefruit. If you can't taste it then you probably need it.

Hydroxychloriquine is a tool to fight the disease not a vaccine you can't just take this drug and be immune from the coronavirus ,it also means that the minute you get the coronavirus they just give you this pill it's a miracle cure, no it's not and it doesn't work on 100% of the people 100% of the time. The coronavirus is still spreading and until the spread rate is dropped so low and they can say hey it's safe to go out without catching this shit we're going to remain locked down.

Since we are arguably in an emergency, what do we have to lose? Reality is the drug has been used for 75 years. It’s contraindications are very well understood. We have great data on profiles of people who would react adversely to the drug - that could be prescreened. There is more than adequate data that shows it is effective in killing the virus, especially earlier in the cycle. Arguably, taking it prior to infection might prove to slow the spread. It is less effective once pneumonia sets in, at that point is when zpac becomes an important part of the protocol. The CDC did research on SARS (19’s big sister) in 2005 and reached the conclusion it would be effective both prophylactically and therapeutically in killing the virus.

No one taking this is taking it for long periods of time... maybe 7 - 10 days. People have taken this drug prophylactically for half a century. If someone starts to have adverse effects they stop taking it. What is the worst that happens, it isn’t 100% effective? The key is stopping the spread. I’d rather take a risk with a drug that we’ve got 50 years of experience with than a vaccine that they are going to rush out the door. How many people get sicker from the flu vaccine than those who don’t take it?

The long term effects are known: retinopathy is one of them. Fortunately, this appears to be limited to long-term use or very high doses.

And evolved resistance is already an issue for malaria. Chloroquine and its derivatives are already ineffective against strains of malaria in East and West Africa, Southeast Asia, and South America.
