This ICU doctor from New York seems to think we are misunderstanding the nature of COVID-19's effect on the lungs which is leading hospitals to incorrectly program the ventilators and actually causing lung damage instead of helping:
May very well explain the low recovery rate once the patient gets to the ventilator stage. In short, he believes the operating assumption should be oxygen deprivation similar to high altitude sickness and NOT respiratory failure. The way the ventilators are currently being used is adding too much pressure and the lungs can't handle it. Trying to compensate for the loss of lung muscle capability when the lung muscles are actually still working fine.
Yikes, I didn't know it was THAT bad. You'd think the medical community would be on fire looking for explanations on why their intubation protocols are failing so badly by this point.
They're putting the serious patients on ventilators because of oxygen loss as it's the only thing that will get their oxygen levels in the blood back up. But they're going about it the wrong way, at least according to this doctor.

NY has a recovery rate of ZERO according to John Hopkins. May be truth to that.
