The States, are the cause of the state of things. To be more specific, Governors of States, and the public health leaders of those states, are the ones getting carried away. I see a lot of whining, but no constructive analysis of the problems which are not uniform but unique to each state.
The states are following the lead of our federal health officials. You have Fauci calling for a national lockdown until there are no new deaths (months or years from now), saying overreaction is the proper reaction, you have apocalyptic models based on bad data and bad assumptions, you have inflated death numbers, the list goes on. If I took everything the experts are saying at face value, as a governor, I would be freaking out too.

Sounds a lot like climate models.
(wags finger) “How dare you ! How ... dare you!
I shouldn’t even be here. I should be in school. But with climate change causing pandemics, I can’t , you see? “ - Greta, probably.
