We've released a number of changes today.
- you can now reply to comments and posts by users who have you blocked (this was a very poorly implemented feature from a time when we were not able to exclude posts from listings)
- you will no longer receive comment reply notifications from users who you have blocked
- we now support MP4 embeds for all HTTPS-enabled hosts
- fixed issue where MP4 embeds would auto-play
The biggest changes are to the mail system. The most obvious change is that we have replaced the inbox icon with a notification bell, and instead of the icon turning red when there's an unread message, a small number will appear in a blue circle. This number indicates the quantity of unread messages that you have, but it will cap out at 9 at this time.
On the backend, there were more significant changes. Previously, we tracked only whether or not a user had an unread message. We did not track how many, and individual messages weren't ever really 'read' or 'unread'. That's changed, and unread messages now have a different style to read ones.
How messages are marked as read:
- if you load the 'unread' messages tab (the whole page will be marked as read)
- if you load a specific message thread directly
- otherwise, you'd need to click the message which will remove the 'unread' styling and mark it as read
Lots more changes coming soon.
Leave your feedback, bug reports, and suggestions in the comments. Upvote the suggestions that you agree with most. We'll use this as an indicator of what's most important.
Issue where inbox shows an unread message eternally should be fixed.
Let me know if anyone encounters this after this comment.
Oh shit I'm first. GEOTUS TAKE MY ENERGY.
..DOGGOS TAKE MY ENERGY!
...STARS AND STRIPES TAKE MY ENERGY!
... TAKE MY AXE!
I don't know how hard this would be, but it would be nice if when minimizing a large set of comments if the screen would scroll to the content you were seeing previously. I do this sometimes when there was some large comment thread that went off topic and I am trying to make sense of a reply that is suddenly at a lower nesting level. Currently when I minimize in this situation I end up getting lost because a bunch of comments I haven't read are suddenly on my screen and I have to scroll up a bunch.
That should be easy. I'll try to add it to the next update.
If you do this, please allow it to be optional. I use "hide" pretty much the opposite way, to get rid of boring comment chains and skip to new ones.
I'm not sure of everything you said or how that works, but I notice a lot of people having trouble with the 'nesting level' thing. It's causing confusion, friction, and nastiness. It stunts our growth because some people don't want to wade through that. Those are probably really good contributors we lose, too.
Changing that might take a really big change that'd be a lot of work? I have no idea how that stuff ticks. Might be a while down the road before that can be addressed ,,,
What's hard to follow about the way comments are nested? Everything looks as clear as I could imagine a comment chain could look. It's not a thread on a message board.
And yet people screw it up and get all pissy. Miscommunication. Then can't be reasoned with. Noobs see it and get turned off. Our growth gets stunted.
When infinite scrolling and clicking into a post, if you click on the browser back button to go back to the infinite scrolling page you will lose your spot. You no longer see what was there before.
Same here. I was hoping they'd fix that too
That happens when I share something on my tablet, but not my phone.
That is annoying. I was wondering if the position of the post changed, like if I’m sorting by new and when I go back, there’s new stuff but it returns you back to where you were on the page.
This happens to me so I turned off infinite scrolling. It seems to only happen once you get beyond what would be a page break, and it seems to go to the "bottom" of what that next page would be. It gets further messed up if you've been expanding images/tweets/etc without clicking into the posts prior to clicking into a post.
I also think when you go back to the main feed from a post, it is reranking the posts (e.g. same as hitting refresh on the feed itself) which I don't usually want to have happen. I want to scroll for a ways, maybe a couple hours, then manually refresh when I want to see what's updated.
I've gotten so used to opening things in new tabs for years that I'm never affected by stuff like that, but I can imagine that'd be a big pain.
Is there an app coming anytime soon?
Yes
I think that should stay private to the mods for the time being, less info we give the libshits the better.
Keep up the good work gents!
We love you!!!!
Literally doing more back-end work in a few months than the 60-600+ reddit employees from 2012 onwards.
Does make one wonder what the reddit employees were really doing.
Being Soros shills on the Dom and other places. Working to change public views, opinions and belief systems.
I was asking a rhetorical question, but that's is definitely the answer.
it's called when conservatives do a job we do it better
This is already the best "reddit-like" website. Voat and SaidIt are run by morons, and ruqqus's design is a bit too confusing.
WE JUST CAN'T STOP WINNING, FOLKS! THE TRUMP TRAIN JUST GOT 10 BILLION MPH FASTER!
CURRENT SPEED: 358,659,385,117,000 MPH!
At that rate, it would take approximately 4.679 years to travel to the Andromeda Galaxy (2.5 million light-years)!
Yup. I've got fat thumb too. I click username alot because it's all bunched together.
Will people reply to this so I can see the notification bell in action please? I'm not creative enough to earn them organically like the rest of you.
I got you.
That looks cool thanks!
Relevant username.
check
Thanks!
There.
I saw that, decided to roll with it.
Pretty sure I saw it change in real time, too.
I'm sure it's been mentioned already, but user flairs would be nice. Also put back bad hombre and nasty woman as topic flairs haha.
Give it a reverse reddit spin and increase the counts haha.
I’d like to be able to edit a Post Heading - right after I post it. Sometimes needs a typo correction. Or maybe a bigger box as you’re posting so you can read your whole message. Or preview message before posting? The only way to correct is delete the post and repost.
Yea like maybe a 2-3 min grace period for editing posts would be great. I know it can’t be permanent because shills would fuck with it for sure...
I'm assuming the limit on the unread count of 9 is due to a limit of character space, perhaps after 9 just a plus sign to indicate more than 9 messages.
I heard another Patriot call the bell icon the Liberty Bell, perhaps the graphic could be changed to look more like the outline of the Liberty Bell.
Thank you for the fine work!
A tips jar!!...c'mon.
Some of us here are LOADED...and we'd (okay, me then) would like to TIP posts/comments we like. Why are you acting so uppity about this??...as if tipping is a dirty act.
We've all tipped cafe and restaurant workers...so what's the difference here??..worried about being called CORRUPT?...grow up and stop being scared pussies. This is OUR space. A tips jar please.
Sadly I imagine finding a payment processor that allows right-wingers to accept donations might be a huge pain. Stripe, for example, would certainly ban this site's account.
Western Union...they mind their own damned business.
I love that upvoted posts will now disappear upon refreshing the page.
However, sometimes I will remove an upvote so I can watch a linked video on my home computer.
Removing the upvote does not allow the post to reappear.
Not a huge deal, just a heads up.
Thanks for all your work.
If a Mods post is stickied, does that mean Mods == Gods SQUARED!?!?
Recommendation: export old Dom logs to build shill blocklist via known IP.
Can we get some sort of poll-like capability? Also I am a JS expert if you are looking for any help front end side.
Thank you!! Has anyone invited Tom Fitton/JW to this site? With all the virus stuff I do miss seeing all they are doing to try to get people locked up.
I agree!
Yall are doing great. Thank you for keeping these updates coming.
How do I unblock a user I accidentally blocked with my clumsy fingers?
https://thedonald.win/blocks
I hope they can space out buttons more on this site for phones, my fingers aren't fat and it's easy to push the wrong button.
I have a persistent ¹ on the Bell
My bell has a 1 even though I've read everything
Mods = gods
WE LOVE OUR MODS <3 <3 <3
Thank you for all the hard work. I know this site doesn't just come together on its own. Oh yeah, and fork Reddit.
Y'all are gods.
I like the bell change, the red on red envelope didn't work for me.
Thank you so much for a home on the Internet.
I would really like the ability to save individual comments.
Mighty fine, mighty fine nods head in impressed approval
How much do you love the feature to hide child comments, and even better is the one that allows viewing context, and then viewing context of the entire thread. Brilliant!
https://i.maga.host/OtMkyRs.PNG . There is a window in the videos now.Very odd
Also, when you open comments in a new tab and then close that tab, the page you were on goes back to the top.
I have the same video issue.
Windows 10.
Edge Chromium
.WIN dark mode
Could you PLEASE add the ability to save comments as well instead of only just posts? Had it on Reddit and only feature I miss :(
Yes, it's on the list.
That feature is in the works! Btw, I have nothing to do with the site I’ve just seen Doggos say they are planning a big saving feature update eventually and comment saving is a part of it.
What software do you use for this site? I'm a member of another (much smaller) community on reddit that's been planning for its eventual nuking by the admins, and none of the alternatives have really given us much comfort in terms of their stance on censorship. It'd be nice to be in control of our own destiny, as it were.
Fully custom, but we're willing to work with any communities that want to leave Reddit.
Bug when infinite scrolling: sometimes posts or a series of posts randomly get duplicated (sorting be new). Seems to happen when a new batch of posts is loading but you scroll up. (IOS safari)
I get a full repeat of 'that page' over and over
Make time-stamped video links skip to the time-stamped point IN the embedded video. They currently don't do that; any embedded video always starts at 0:00. For example:
https://thedonald.win/p/FMStnzr0/fake-news-believer-asking-a-grow/c/
Here's an example of what Reddit does:
https://www.reddit.com/r/The_Donald/comments/f9ocac/full_democrat_primary_debate_in_south_carolina/
Quick, someone message me so I can be impressed
Boom
Thanks!
Thanks!
Been working fine for me and love the bell upgrade!
BUG: When I triple click the image preview icon, the image opens and closes immediately. Then the image displays behind the text that is below.
Example: https://i.maga.host/OoxHIH4.png
This has happened to me once
Ahhhhh, that’s how that happens.
thank you. the orange-on-red was very hard to see
A feature that Reddit never seemed to have but might be nice to have here is the ability to insert images (memes) into comments.
Could we get a page or sidebar showing us numbers like community size, users online now, new users in past 30 days, number of posts in past 24 hours, etc... ?
Thanks for the hard work!
