As far as I know they use trends, info from areas that've already been hit, ROI, etc. It can change quickly in either direction based on actions taken or not taken, meds working or not working, viral mutations etc but I'm not a statistician so I'm sure I've left stuff out.
I do know there's a set formula - we have people in our hospital who work out such things, they're usually really close to being totally accurate and if not, there's a reason they can explain. We had to read all the details & look at all the graphs when they began forcing us to take flu vax, wear masks during flu season, etc. I forget which dept it is - they're in the basement lol poor bastards.

Commenting to save, so I can compare to actual numbers. These people doing the models once said millions dying. I’ve had enough of this BS. Have they done models of auto accidents? If so, why haven’t liberals banned vehicles yet. Have they done deaths by smoking or alcohol? We still have liquor stores (even open during lockdown) and tobacco stores. Yet for this virus they close schools, send college kids home, stop spring sports and Little League...it is unfortunate that people die from this, but people die from many things. I just bought my first gun in August and my second one in January. I have 280 rounds of .223 and 500 rounds of 9 mm. SA and Russia don't want to miss this opportunity to hamstring North American oil so I think they're going to sandbag for another month.
We've got some good news right now that bumped up the market, but we haven't seen any lasting impact of the shutdown yet. If everyone is able to pick up and go back to work sure, this may be the bottom, but if half of the people aren't able to go back to work, we're going to see the market drop more.
But in the long term, anytime is good to buy now - maybe you lose 10% but it will return pretty quickly.

My sister is a doctor. They have aptitude to spend hours reading over and over something to memorize it. They tend to not be able to think outside of the box and thinking independently.
There is be some diversity of opinion geographically yes. There will also be diversity of opinion between individuals. If one's source who is a doctor is one of the minority free thinking doctors it will be different from the typical doctor who is good at repeating accepted norms.

People speculated on line that there would be a supply line interruption to the gas supply because of Hurricane Harvey. People then panicked and everyone was essentially trying to buy gas at the same time. There was a gas run- and they wished the shortage into existence. Some people had to call in sick to work because there was no gas- and San Antonio is lacking in a comprehensive mass transit system. And Uber and taxi drivers were having trouble gassing up as well. It was a real shitshow.
I remember 13 or 14 years ago, we were being told the earth is running out of oil, and we'd be back to horse-drawn carriages by 2060.

The key to not being useless, is developing skills that come with you. Sure, some skills require tools (like being a mechanic), but the knowledge is your real asset. (Using the Mechanic example) you can go anywhere and still be employable - but you're also a free lancer. You can go anywhere in the world and fix things.
Carpenters, IT professionals, Medical...etc... same thing applies.

The connections/network you make while working in IT can greatly increase your outreach ability after retirement or in your later years of working adulthood. At 33, I'm not as tech savvy as I should be, but I already know/conceptualize dozens of opportunities.
You sell yourself by how well you conceptualize the big picture and it's smaller components. I don't need to know anything about your product to know how to test it or market it or brand it, or to know whether it's inherently evil and/or deceptive, or genuinely good for humanity. (though it takes some intelligence to claim to know what's good/bad for everyone)..

We've got some good news right now that bumped up the market, but we haven't seen any lasting impact of the shutdown yet. If everyone is able to pick up and go back to work sure, this may be the bottom, but if half of the people aren't able to go back to work, we're going to see the market drop more.
But in the long term, anytime is good to buy now - maybe you lose 10% but it will return pretty quickly.

Update from small town Canada: Our local hospital is sitting at 38% capacity. Normally runs at over 100% Yes over 100% I asked twice because I didn't believe it the first time I heard it. The nurses are standing around with nothing to do. Went downtown for groceries yesterday, stores all full, even found tp! The only thing the store was out of was Yeast. Lots of home baking going on
