I've never understood why the Japanese would attack the US. Even without my 20/20 hindsight, it doesn't seem like opening up a new front would be a good idea.
Same thing with Mussolini dragging Germany into Africa.
It makes me think that the greatest enemy of the Axis was their own stupidity/arrogance/desperation, they were starting fights in areas for no good reason.
They wanted to cripple the Pacific fleet so they could advance on the Philippines and take the oil there. The Philippines are allied with America so attacking the Philippines means America would aid their ally. So they dida preemptive strike on us.
