What the Captain did was unacceptable and warranted his dismissal. The Navy Secretary went in dry with his comments, likely feeling defensive from the criticism of his decision and the support the crew expressed for the Captain. He definitely could have handled it better, but he really fucked up by apologizing, even though he was apparently directed to apologize. Bending the knee is pretty much always a bad idea, especially in cases like this when you have the Democrats nipping at your heels.

Yep. If the SECNAV wanted to say something to the TR sailors, he could just have told them [navy whistle noise] "This is SECNAV. Sorry we had to shitcan your captain. He was a good guy, and made a mistake. TYFYS." [/navy whistle noise]
