As an appalled civilian, with no military service whatsoever but who still happens to be an American - what the fucking fuck? Fuck this captain, fuck this crew, and fuck every single snowflake disgracing our uniform that's worried about getting the virus. This isn't what I expect of my country's military. For fuck's sake, I'm not in a critical mission like manning a nuclear aircraft carrier and I still have to work in my job even when sick. I can't believe the whining I'm seeing out of the Navy about "safety" and "caring for the crew". You have no idea how bad this makes the Navy look. Maybe they should be tucked safely in bed with Daddy giving them their care-bear? How can any adversary respect that? I sure don't.
In defense of the crew, is it not possible that they wished to give their captain a nice send off, even if they understood why he got shitcanned? That their chanting for him did not mean they were protesting his firing, but to show appreciation for his service on their ship? Just a thought.
It is more complicated than that, information has been slowly coming out and the captain followed the chain of command, but the letter was leaked. There is more going on here. Also when illness goes through a carrier it gets bad fast and they have had serious problems even with flu bugs. They are in extremely tight quarters, I have heard many stories. If they are sick enough that they can't do their jobs it is serious. That said it now looks like he sent the letter and action was taken after which it was leaked. I want to know who the leaker is
I have read the memo and sending it through unsecured email to a bunch of civilians/journalists is the kind of offense that firing isn't nearly enough for. It's a nuclear aircraft carrier, not a cruise ship. I'm frankly disgusted in the weakness in this military; it's a disgrace.
Gonna disagree. You are saying this from the safety of your home, where you have the ability to make sure your family is safe and protected.
Having 20 years in the military, I can identify with hundreds of people packed like sardines in an infected ship away from their families.
The morale and stress on the crew was likely palpable. None of them signed up to get infected, but they were all there on duty. The captain should have been fired for the leak, but the ship, in peacetime, should do everything possible to protect crew.
Most of them have families back home dealing with this -- regular communication is a problem once the ship is out of cell phone range. Sure, there is email, and they hear all their kids are home with their wives, all alone. Are people looking out for them? Maybe. Are their wives, surrounded by kids 24-7 going insane, Definitely. The corona Virus on the ship is the least of their problems. You have completely ignored one of the largest sacrifices our military members make: Separation from Family, and missing important life happenings. They cannot support their spouses, most of whom are stationed away from immediate family at a naval port somewhere.
Thing is, SECNAV apparently WAS trying to get the crew off. Was in the process of doing it. Had the Governor of Guam commandeering hotel rooms to put them in. Then Crozier threw them all under the bus because they weren't going fast enough to suit him.

I'm with you. The baggers at my local grocery store are showing more courage than this Captain did.
Fellow civilian here.

A generous interpretation; I sure hope it's right.

Sent through proper channels means secured transmission

Wow.
Just wow.
