I think care needs to be taken in making assumptions. HIV is often used in experiments simply because it's already very well studied, known and available with many tool kits and reverse engineering for it. You wouldn't expect that unless you took a look at science that's being done. In scientific terms HIV is a common labhold appliance.
The HIV sequences are very tiny so it's not right to say that virus is HIV like as a result. It's not like a mule. It's almost like a thorough bred but one in a thousand ancestors was a donkey. The result is something that looks like a horse, not a donkey.
It is interesting however that the location of the inserts into SARS-CoV-2 are very specific in terms of area of function and the source of the inserts from HIV are also very specific in terms of area of function.
The inserts are very small so the link is tentative but people are also rushing to dismiss it prematurely. The original paper called it uncanny and it really is.
