The common knowledge in virology for decades has been that real surgical masks don't help, but now that there's a mass panic and idiots are hoarding PPE that actually IS important for other uses, the CDC says to go ahead and tie a t shirt around your face.

What makes you so sure the lie was the FIRST thing and not the second thing? Did we get new ground-breaking scientific experiments that showed a loose cotton weave handkerchief could stop virions that are a few hundred nanometers in size? Or did we get a new problem with the panicky general public desperately wanting to do something to make themselves FEEL safer regardless of whether it actually does them any good?

I don't really have a dog in this fight. But I am curious, especially since now I'm mandated to wear one. Masks don't stop you from inhaling a virus, let's say. O.K. But do they stop you, even loose cotton weave handkerchiefs, from breathing your germs and viruses all over people and things, like food in the super market?

Not necessarily. The prime avenue of infection is sill touching contaminated surfaces with your hands and then touching your face. The paper masks don't seal, and airflow follows the path of least resistance, so if you cough in a mask it just redirects the flow across your cheeks. Thanks to Bernoulli's law, it may even travel further away from you.

Then there's the risk of bacterial infection thanks to walking around with a petri dish strapped to your face. Doctors have to change their masks between each patient. The mask doesn't kill germs, it just traps some of them. If you're wearing the mask all over the place, then it's just something else that's carrying the germs and dropping them.

With something like a single layer of cloth, whatever contamination is on the inside is on the outside too. So if you're touching the mask and then touching other things you're still spreading the germs. If anything, the mask takes a single cough that would have contaminated a small area around the individual and it allows the individual to keep carrying those germs all over the place spreading them further.

It's the same with gloves. If you touch a contaminated surface with a glove and then touch your face with the same glove, the glove makes zero difference. The virus isn't absorbed through the skin anyway. If the cashiers at the grocery store are touching every single thing going across the register with the same pair of gloves it's spreading just as much germs as if they wore no gloves at all.

This is also why the mask mandate without a glove mandate is sheer idiocy.

Combine that with the fact that 99% of the public have not been trained to properly put on or remove gloves so you don't spread anything and it's all a joke.

And let's say you go through a routine with masks AND gloves and you head to the grocery store and purchase a bunch of items.

Logic would dictate that these objects are now contaminated since they came from an uncontrolled environment. So you bring those contaminated items right into your home and onto your kitchen counter. Then you put some of those items in your fridge and the rest in your cabinets.

How many people are going through a decon process before they bring items into their home?

Exactly. The gloves are a bigger joke than the masks. There's no difference between a stock person wiping their face and then touching stuff with gloves on or without them.

If anything, the gloves give people a false sense of security. They think their stuff is clean because the grocery bagger has gloves on, but if they've been wearing the same pair of gloves all day, what difference does it make?
