Is it even possible to take out student loan money that isn't paid directly to the school? I haven't dealt with student loans in a long time, but that sounds suspicious.
some student loans give you a housing component in the loan (not shocking that campus area housing is suspiciously exactly that stipend).
Obviously there are people that take the loan then live with roommates and treat the excess loan as spending cash like that principle isn't constantly compounding interest.
You get option to get stipends past your tuition I did that but put all my extra money to paying off debt. But for a 20 year old, they might not have that discipline.

As someone who threw most of his student loans at investments, I don't think they check.
