You have to actually know what's in character for the politicians you are dealing with and the forces at play in politics to construct them otherwise all you are creating is trashy fanfiction. One of the major reasons New York is in such dire straits with this pandemic is because it's liberal politicians initially refused to take this virus seriously lest they be considered racist and urged their virtue signalling constituents to do the same.
