I managed a customer service call center and one guy used to always try to use this shit. He actually didn't know most of the phonetic alphabet and made shit up as he went along. It confused the shit out of customers but we'd laugh our asses off listening to him take calls

"So your name is Carl? As in Chameleon, alpha, ricola, llama, is that correct sir?"

I'll say: Uniform for U is close enough to Unicorn that I feel they can be used interchangeably.

I did the phonetic alphabet in a call center.

It works. They also listen to you more clearly because they assume you were a pilot (I have no idea why that is the assumption.

But if you know it, I would suggest using it. You might want to slip on Zulu though from Personal experience/ just say zebra.

I agree. It's not being a Dwight, it's about spelling clearly over a communication line, like a phone or a radio. The clarity in cellphones are terrible these days, so it's a very good skill to hone actually. Something about those specific words ("Lima", "Charlie", "Papa", etc.) that (if you're not a complete idiot) clarifies what you're spelling. It's literally a time saver.

I believe there are TWO versions of the alphabet, too. One is pre WW II. Need to look that up, but I thought was the case.
