If he had told Trump that was bullshit - Trump could have gotten the travel bans in a month earlier. Trump had to trust the guy knew what he was talking about, unfortunately.
That said, the media and Democrats shit on the China travel ban as "racist" after he implemented it - so he comes out way ahead of them.
He took that information, knowing it was false, to pass onto Trump. When Trump repeated it, it could be used as ammunition for the LameStream™ Media to use against Trump and rile up their LameStream™ base.

I wouldn't go that far without proof. My suspicion is that Fauci was just duped - and was overly naive.
If you think he is merely a Chinese puppet, that would require some kind of proof.
