I'm a former Berner. Donated, have his book, preached his gospel, attended his rally. Ended up voting Trump 2016.

Sometimes us ignorant to socialism and true deph of politics are more focused on ideals and concepts, wrongly so, but still focused.

Look at Bernie from a 10,000 ft view, not your true view of his socialist policies:

1.) Isn't your typical politician: wasnt a Clinton, Bush, or anyone else they had seen in politics.

2.) Marched for Civil Rights before it was popular

3.) Wants to help students, the poor, and provide healthcare

4.) Wants to fight the feudalist society of Lord's reigning over the peasants and serfs

Are his solutions right? No, obviously not. But just take a second to empathize how someone could support Bernie, then switch to Trump. Trump supports the same things, just in different ways:

1.) Truly is unlike any politician

2.) First President to support LGBT community before being elected lowest minority unemployment, highest minority small business openings and loan grants

3.) Wants to remove state boundaries to ensure national healthcare competition.

4.) Wants to elevate the middle class and empower the lower class

Micro examination, yeah Bernie sucks. But many don't yet realize that. At every level Trump is awesome and hilarious.

Most supporters just hated "politics as usual" and wanted TRUE change, not the crap Obama peddled. They just don't have an understanding of economics, politics, or logic, lol. Takes time, but some red pills need time.

Yeah, when I talk to Sanders supporters who aren't complete Brain-Washed Automatons, these are generally the 4 things they talk about. When I bring up all of the various failings and horrors of Socialism, many times they are just ignorant to these things. And, on top of it all, they have this loose hatred of Trump, "Because they are supposed to" "Because he's RACIST". When you probe them for examples, most of the time they don't have them. A few of these people have evolved, especially after Bernie cucked out again. But a few of them are still lost. I'm still throwing red pills their way.

sixfingerdildo 31 points ago +31 / -0

The berners I've met in person don't think they're communists, they want to tax the rich to pay for everything.

They don't see the similarities with Trump in regards to non politician, anti establishment, anti corruption, anti fraud.

They don't see how Bernie is a fraud for supporting Clinton despite his vritism of her.

Trump is a racist, mysogynist, arrogant elitist asshole to them and that's all. They can't prove racism, they don't know what misogyny means and the rest is simply presumed cuz he's rich.

For all their snobby liberal educated views, they cant argue or logic for shit.

2

In Bernie's ideal America, the question of Rich versus Poor will be Those Who Have Toilet Paper versus Those Who Don't

2
WeinerLapTop 2 points ago +2 / -0

I tell them in my america we are all billionaires.

3
Meddlesom 3 points ago +3 / -0

In reality, taxing the billionaires and millionaires 100% wouldn't run the government for even a day... because every single one of them would move to another country, taking their money and businesses and jobs with them.

2
jfchops 2 points ago +2 / -0

Imagine a country like Brazil becoming a world superpower in a matter of years because all of America's makers went there with their money and ideas.

They'd take care of the real poverty problem in no time and build a powerhouse economy. Brazil enjoys mostly the same strategic global geography advantages that the US does keeping it safe from actual enemies (China etc).

A black guy i work with who supports Bernie was dumbfounded when I said Bernie is a communist.

He said i was full of shit.

I showed him an article stating the fact, and he still refused to believe it.

From the article:

https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2019/feb/24/bernie-sanders-reveals-his-radical-inclinations-ov/

"As mayor of Burlington, Vermont, in the 1980s, Mr. Sanders hung a Soviet flag in his office in honor of Burlington’s Soviet sister city, Yaroslavl, where he honeymooned in 1988 with his second wife, Jane O’Meara Sanders."

And this guy still doesn't believe it. I even showed him a video of Bernie singing half naked with a bunch of soviets, and he STILL didnt believe me.

I'm done with Bernie bros. If they want to keep supporting a cucked candidate, that's on them. I'll keep supporting a winner.

The strongest argument for socialism is that it sounds good. The strongest argument against socialism is that it doesn't work. But those who live by words will always have a soft spot in their hearts for socialism because it sounds so good.

60
rbobjones69 [S] 60 points ago +60 / -0

I already know where it comes from. He works in customer service for a major health insurer and is frustrated at the limits on them. He's coworkers feel the same. He thought that universal health care would fix the ills he deals with every day. I've been working on him for years and I am making headway.

39
ThisTrainHasNoBrakes 39 points ago +40 / -1

Continue to remind him as he interacts with government workers. The stupid. The lazy. The power hungry. All of these people are the reasons things that "work great on paper" do not work in reality.

2
thisguy883 2 points ago +2 / -0

Sadly this.

I'm a contractor for the military.

The CIV bosses we have make some questionable calls sometimes, and not for the better.

One of my co-workers is retired Army who did the same job when he was active duty, and he is constantly flipping out on how things are done and why the CIVs make these calls. I keep having to remind him that its not our job to question it, but to just do the work they want us to do. Should something happen, it will be their asses on the lines, not us. We can only make suggestions. Its up to the CIVs to make the call.

^^Doing God's work^^The slow subtle approach is the best. It's taken a few years but my brothers and mom are coming around. Even my Mexico-born legal immigrant fiancee is on the train. People dont like being told why they're wrong, best to just show the evidence and let them decide for themselves.

14
tombombadil 14 points ago +14 / -0

If you don't do it slow and subtle then you will just push them further into their skewed views.

12
slrpnls 12 points ago +13 / -1

It's frustrating that people think the options are Status quot or government healthcare. I feel like there has to be a third way.

10
when_we_win_remember 10 points ago +10 / -0

My solution is catastrophic insurance for everyone (not mandated by law but with severe consequences (ie bankrupcy) for people who do not buy it and then need millions in healthcare), then for the rest everyone basically pays for their own shit in a free market. People have this fucked up idea that they shouldn't pay anything for health care. We pay for food, and yet there's plenty of food aid available in this country for people who need it. We pay for water. We pay for a lot of things that are essential to human life.

3
slrpnls 3 points ago +3 / -0

I used to have an HSA coupled with a high deductable health plan which was essentially this to a point. Whenever I went to the doctor I paid out of pocket (usually about $100.) Once I hit my deductable everything was paid for but I only hit that once and that was when I was in the ER after a fall. The cost vs. the traditional plan was substantial. I don't know how much my employer saved but I suddenly had around $50 a paycheck that I wasn't spending on insurance. It was great!

1
when_we_win_remember 1 point ago +1 / -0

Lefties and a lot of Republicans don't like these because what they're selling isn't insurance. It's a transfer payment from sparing users of healthcare to superusers. If you press them on it, they'll admit that's what they really want, which is why they're so keen on getting young people who mostly don't need it to sign up. This is almost ok as long as you're honest about what you're doing. What is not ok is adding a huge tax to support a network of bureaucrats and profiteers.

The biggest wake up call is to take him on a Europe trip and get "sick" over there and try to see a doctor. The system goes from "I'm sorry you can't pay for that service" to "That service isn't offered because it is too expensive".

It's the same limitations in different words. I have so many anecdotes about missed diagnosis in Europe where the doctors LEGIT said "doing additional tests was not cost-efficient, so we didn't do it."

Funniest example I can think of is when a journalist was outraged over the price of flu medication for his daughter, something like 300 bucks, meanwhile over in Europe there is one treatment and it's completely free. Go home. That is it. There is no treatment unless you end up in the hospital.

I'll try to find it but chances are low.

-1
LibOwner -1 points ago +1 / -2

That’s just not true. I have a number of family members living in Europe (Portugal, France) and they just don’t have these bureaucratic waits that you speak of. It’s not true and you’re spreading fake news.

4
BoughtByBloomberg 4 points ago +4 / -0

they just don’t have these bureaucratic waits

Too bad reality disagrees with you.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0168851013001759

I have worked in these system buddy. I speak from experience.

https://www.hqontario.ca/System-Performance/Wait-Times-for-Diagnostic-Imaging

That one was even funnier! Did you see that shit? Patients who should be scanned WITHIN 28 days.... waited on average 37 days! Even worse! Patients who SHOULD be scanned in 10 days waited 16 days!

The only way to get treatment within the target range is to have a serious condition.

You know you can't even FIND wait times for the US? I tried. Googled really hard to FIND wait time statistics. They don't exist because the average wait time is 3 days. Yes you can go to the doctor on Monday, get scanned on Thursday and see your doctor for results on Friday.

Want to know what's even funnier? When I tried to search this in bing what I got was studies complaining about the wait times... for how long the scan takes! Not time to get the TURN to be scanned. But complaining that the scans were taking 60 minutes instead of 30 minutes using new algorithms.

Healthcare moves slower in Europe. Wait times are longer and sometimes LETHAL.

Emergency care is the same everywhere in the first world. You are treated immediately, but that is Emergency care as in heart attacks, strokes, car crashes with multiple trauma, diabetic comas, etc. Literally things that if you are not treated you are dead.

Anything elective takes LONGER.

-6
deleted -6 points ago +3 / -9
2
BoughtByBloomberg 2 points ago +3 / -1

What are your wait times for elective surgery? (pre-quarantine of course) How many MONTHS are they? Why do European hospitals budget surgeries?

Do you know each European country adhered to a QALY cost model? As in if your life costs X amount of money they simply refuse to pay for your medicine or treatment?

I didn't say you couldn't see a doctor. I said the limitation shifts from you can't pay for that to "we won't do that cause it's too expensive."

-7
deleted -7 points ago +1 / -8
6
BoughtByBloomberg 6 points ago +6 / -0

If you want, you can do that privately.

Exactly! Thank you for admitting immediately that the public system is so fucking bad that you need to go private for speedy treatment. Now what about all the people waiting for MRI scans? What about all the people needing new hips on month long wait lists? The average person forcibly enrolled in the public health option and with no money to go private? Fuck em right cause..... you care about them?

lymphoma burn through their insurance and die after they got cut off?

I have seen people with cancer be told treatment won't be continued because there was "no use" and the doctors would not allow experimental treatments even if the patient offered to pay. These people usually hop on a plane for the US and continue treatment there.

I've seen people get called back 2 year later with a story of "looking back to previous exams we now see the early stages of cancer but back then we didn't think it was cost-effective to do more tests" or to translate "We could have done an extra scan 6 months later for $700 and caught the disease earlier but hey gotta cut corners to save money!"

Even seen somebody not make it to a specialist because their GP didn’t think it was a big deal.

That is literally public healthcare in a nutshell. No direct access to specialist unless GP says so. That is how the budget is maintained. You slow down the people that see a specialist to the bare minimum. Like for example an 93 year old man whose GP had told him he was just catching the cold but later turned out to have multiple pulmonary embolisms.

Want another story? A man with hepatitis C hears of a new drug that can cure hepatitis C. Guess what. It costs 84000 dollars.... or just above the QALY price. It will not be covered by his public healthcare. What does he do? Nothing. He waits for the health minister to negotiate the price of Viekirax and Exviera down to levels that the public health system will compensate ONE YEAR LATER. He was denied treatment because the disease had progressed past the point that treatment was likely to produce a cure.

He paid thousands of dollars in taxes every year. He paid thousands of dollars every year to the public health insurance. He was left out to die because his treatment was too expensive.

The closest thing is that you get put on a waiting list for treatment of non-life-threatening conditions if you’re really old....And, again, if you want to go private you can and it’s orders of magnitude cheaper.

In what fucking fantasy world do you live? It's CHEAPER to go private? But we should all go on PUBLIC healthcare.... if it's cheaper to go PRIVATE everyone would go PRIVATE! What the fuck are you arguing for!? Paying MORE money for WORSE care?!

The funniest is that I never said any was better or WORSE!

I literally said the only difference between private health and public health is that instead of telling the patient they can't afford the treatment the line shifts to the treatment costing to much to be worth it.

This idea that the US is health Mecca

There is a reason why people think that. Mostly because we keep seeing a pattern of treatments being pioneered in the US where companies can recoup the cost of production and then only AFTER that period and the price starts dropping do others get it. In the US with proper insurance that is 1.5 times as expensive than the norm if paid for out of pocket you will get the best and most recent treatments.

Nowadays, they only ”learn” about how America is a racist country which enslaved all the Africans and killed all the natives. Then, Woodrow Wilson, FDR, JFK, and LBJ came around and solved all of America’s problems.

Meanwhile, most students graduating high school have never read the constitution and wouldn’t pass an immigrations civics exam.

Source: current high school student.

In my 10th grade social studies half the year was dedicated to the U.S. and western capitalism while the other half was about the communist revolutions and Russian history.

3
saco 3 points ago +3 / -0

I learned about it in 8th grade back in 2010. We laughed at it and couldn't comprehend why any country would want an economic system like that.

My school may or may not be in the minority, but too many schools glorify socialism/communism because it is taught by leftist wackos and activists.

I kind of wished Bernie had won the nomination just because I wanted to see him and his whole socialist movement get decimated nationally.

When Trump beat Hillary, people were saying, "If Bernie had won the nomination, he would've beaten Trump." People will be saying this too when Trump defeats the alzheimer's patient.

(Of course, if Bernie could beat Trump, it makes you wonder why he couldn't beat Hillary and Biden.)

The DNC picks a lot of candidates that even leftists admit are crap, but unfortunately those leftists think the antidote is Bernie. They think Bernie and his socialism are the "anti-establishment" candidate to save America.

Even if support for the DNC establishment wanes down, even if there are mass arrests for people like Obama, Hillary, etc, I suspect there is still going to be this movement of socialists we'll have to deal with in the future presidencies to come.
