Here I can chime in with an anecdotal denial. My neighbors are a couple of this sort, and the feminine one is definitely in charge every inch of the way. She makes the money, and she sets the rules. She's the nicest person you'll ever meet, till you fuck with her. She's had her butch girlfriend in tears quite a few times. I know because we share a wall. They've been together about 7 years now.
Although I will admit, her previous girlfriend, it wasn't so much this way. But they had a nasty, nasty break-up, and she is much tougher now.
