That meant only the rich kids could afford to pay (well, their parents did)...BUT there were hundreds of Commonwealth Scholarships for the talented 'poor' kids to get in. These scholarships were like a gold pass; payed for everything. So only the richest and/or SMARTEST kids went to Uni...yes it was obviously not the perfect system; but far more streamlined than whats operating today.
I'd wager that somewhere between 65%-85% of young people do not need to go to college to make a good living for themselves and would be far better placed learning trades/skills. The public school to college pipeline for everyone is such an unbelievable scam and detriment to our nation. I know that I had the intellect for the college education I received, but beyond getting my first professional job, my degree has done nothing for me. If I could go back, I would've learned a skill or joined the military instead of going to college. Public schools simply do not teach alternatives to college, so our colleges have become as shitty and useless as our public schools. It's so sad to see.
