I thought the area where that happened was democrat. I could be wrong, but I thought I remember reading that in one of the articles that were written. It didn't surprise me, I've seen the county by county vote totals form the 2016 and 2018 election and it looks like about half of the Mississippi counties vote blue.
You are correct about it being a democrat-run area. Those churchgoers were in Greenville, MS run by democratic mayor Erik D. Simmons. Washington county, the county containing Greenville, usually votes blue.
Most of Mississippi's blue votes come from the delta region next to the MS river. The MS delta is consistently one of the poorest areas in the entire USA.
I don't know where it happened, but I'm looking at the giant 2016 election results poster in my office and I do see that Mississippi counties are very much half blue, half red.
