Just got laid off this morning from the best job a girl could ever have. Never been laid off, never not had a plan in place. I’m in a fog and I don’t know where to begin. Can I get some virtual hugs from fellow pedes, and maybe some ideas on next steps? I know I need to file for unemployment (hooray, I’m a statistic), and I need to talk to the bank and my credit cards about my mortgage and bills. Is there anything else? Much love ❤️

Its definitely a world turner. I remember getting laid off back in 09. Felt the same things youre feeling, but i can tell you feom experience that things will work out. Its awful right now but youll be ok. Just do the basics. File for ue. Call the bank and credit cards. They will work with you. Take it 1 day at a time. Thats all you can do and stay positive. It Will be ok. Ill never forget that time from Jan-Feb 09 was pretty depressing but I made it thru and by July of that year we were on our way to Kuaui for a vacation after landing a new contract gig. Take a deep breath and just stay positive. Exercise, listen to music. Remember , when 1 door closes another one opens. 👍🏼🇺🇸

Are you old enough to be not claimed as a dependent? Not a full time student? If so, file for unemployment, notify your mortgage holder or any other loans you may have. They will give you a deferment but interest will still accrue. Then hold on until the economy in your area gets better and hopefully you can get that job back. It won’t be long, I think, even if you have a budding totalitarian Dimm governor after their citizens see other states opening up. Take care.

Thank you for validating my thoughts.

I really hope it won’t be long, but Parsons (Missouri) just went for “indefinite”, which is stupid because he was arguing so long to not put us under this stupid lockdown. I really hope it won’t be long.

so sorry Silent,

think of your cheapest, favorite (relatively), foods and stock up a bunch. When I've been laid off, watching money go on food is one of the biggest stresses.

and thinking of the money not spent when i'm eating frozen pizzas or whatever is encouraging

Thankfully when the lockdown initially hit, I made a big trip to Aldi to stock up on the cheap basics that would last me a long time - rice, pasta, canned foods, frozen meat. Got stuff to make bread. It may be a boring rotation, but I won’t need to go out and get food. I’ll miss pears and maybe the first crop of peaches, but that’s okay. It’ll make the next time I can get them that much better, right?

Thank you.

Oh man, that’s what I’m really really hoping for! Right now I’m so upset and afraid and worried, and I’m really hoping I can look back on this in six months and smile because it all turned out okay and things got bigger and better.

Thank you!

Any utilities, phone bills and the like that are under automatic payments need to be dealt with. You don’t want them going through if there’s no money in the account.

With the extended benefits program, the unemployment will be available for 4 months without extra paperwork. That should keep you afloat, but don’t wait to start looking for something else. Even if it’s not your normal field.

I think only one account is automatic, so I’ll need to stop that immediately. Thank you - that’s something I didn’t think about.

Four months is definitely a relief. I don’t plan on waiting to start looking, but honestly, I really want to be rehired at my old job. Loved it. Absolutely loved it. Loved the work, loved the people, loved the building, loved what we did. The amount of crying I’ve done today is because I had to say goodbye/see you later to it all. I’m just so heartbroken. It hurts.

These are some special circumstances to say the least, you have every right to be upset.

Don’t be surprised if the unemployment process is tied up. Might take some extra work to get your application in and whatnot due to all the people crashing the system. Benefits are around half of your normal salary, plus the president had $600 tacked on with the CARES act.

Thank you. One of the things I was really unsure about was how much unemployment actually was. Half salary won’t be pretty, but it’ll be doable.. just watch the pennies and be thankful the weather is warming up so I won’t need the heat on. Thank you so much for the help and knowledge. ❤️

So sorry to hear this, pede. Every single day, I think of all the people the shutdown has negatively affected. I know you'll get plenty of good advice here. I'll send every bit of positive energy I can generate your way.

Hang tough. I have a feeling that you may be getting a call to come back to the same company in the not to distant future.

I really really hope so. I love them. They’re family. They’re a wonderful wonderful company. I can’t even say that I’m mad at them. They cut 6% of us today, and the company email that went out said they agonized over it. My bosses didn’t sleep last night over it. Going back to them would be the dream. Thank you so much for your encouragement. ❤️
