You should both protect against the virus and protect the livelihoods of people. Not one or the other.
Donald Trump was very early reg. imposing travel restrictions upon China, in late January, and he was right to do so, despite great pressure and criticism from the deep state, the MSM, the WHO, and China. But he was lied to by the deep state and others, to the extreme, and so he didn't impose travel restrictions upon the clusterf*** known as the EU. If he had done that, chances might have been greater of preventing the transmission or at least delaying it, which would have greatly helped the economy, preparations, etc. as well. No virus, no lock-down.
The virus is still an unknown, and the WHO and China (and the deep state) continues to lie to the extreme about the virus.
What of course doesn't help is that the lock-down measures are not accompanied by measures that protect the livelihoods of people due to Congress and Democrats intentionally sabotaging everything and seemingly seeking to destroy the USA (they seem to prefer the USA being destroyed than Donald Trump being re-elected). Nor does it help that the deep state will exploit every measure they can such as lock-downs, no matter whether it is valid or not. A lock-down measure by mutually trusted parties can make sense, but the deep state is not at all trustworthy. Which can be seen in among other ways that some places tried to limit or prevent the purchase of guns (how would preventing the purchase of guns at all help fight a disease???...).
