Isn't this going to tank in the long run? I have friends who are servers at restaurants (some fine dining and some just your franchise restaurants like Chilis) pulling $875 a week. Hell, if it wasn't for my job's medical insurance I'd get fired just to draw unemployment at $875 a week. Cannot fathom how all these people are now getting paid MORE to be unemployed.

This is the problem my company has. We own a bar. The people we laid off due to the lockdown are now making more than they did when they were working. The PPP program requires us to bring our payroll back to where it was before the lockdown to be forgiven the loan, but they would make less if they did so. So now we have to hire randos at $12/hr just to pad the payroll for 8 weeks.

If you hired people who would much rather sit on their butts and collect a check than work at the job you hired them for, you shouldn't complain. Good riddance, move on.

If you offer your employees their pay back and they refuse then that's considered quitting their job and they should be removed from UC

3 months wages divided by 26 is how they figure unemployment. That’s 50% of working wages. Not sure where you came up with them making more than they made working. Not how it’s figured, even with the possible $600 extra bucks tacked on by the CARES act.

No. I have a friend who works at Chilis she is making $875 a week since she gets unemployment. She was not making that at Chilis in Huntsville, Alabama. No friggin' way.

Yeah, wife got laid off - $55k/yr salary. She's pulling $1000/week now, so basically the same or more as salary.

My salary was $75k and has been reduced to $45k and I'm about to get laid off as well, so it'll probably be more per month on unemployment than the current $45k I'm making, since they go by last year's earnings.

These people aren't going to even want their jobs back until the extra $600/mo runs out in July. Both the wife and I will be looking for new jobs (I'll be looking immediately, she's going to wait to see if her employer brings people back since she was there 20 yrs) because we're not NEET faggots, but basic math tells you these servers ain't gonna want their jobs back until after mid summer.

And when they have to get jobs again, the cries for UBI will be deafening. "You paid me $600/week before! Why not $2,000/month now! Obviously it's doable, and $2000/mo is less than $2400/mo! We deserve $2000/mo.or $20/hr minimum wage!"

It's truly a shit show and many aren't going to be willing to go back to work.

Protesting your gov to get to go back and earn an income is another option but people would rather hold out their hand for rations. It's not setting a good precedent. Many that are getting benefits haven't contributed anything to be compensated for.

It's temporary. It's to get people caught up on their bills. Many states are so backed up they are still getting nothing. Self employed, 1099 etc won't be able to even sign up in Mid May. I already know people behind on rent and bills etc. The Xtra 600 has not even been sent out yet.

Unemployment is figured by the highest paid quarter (3 months salary) divided by 26.

That works out to 50% of your normal salary. You also have to check in weekly to see if you still qualify. Actively looking for work and proving it is part of the qualifications.

I guess in some industries, nobody cares about a gap in unemployment. I certainly would ask what they did during this gap and it better be something useful than laying around high all day.

I know I have one friend who works at a fine dining restaurant (which is phenomenal and he loves it and it looks like that will be his career since we are in our 30s). He is sitting back doing just that and just going to draw this check until the restaurant opens back up.

Home Depot and Walmart are hiring sign his ass up.

While the restaurant is closed, no problem, that's an excuse and since the job available after, not really a gap in employment. I'm thinking of the people that get called back and refuse to go because free government money is easier. That 6-12 month gap can be a career killer for some, maybe not in the restaurant business.

If they are called back to work and they refuse, that's equivalent to quitting their job and they should technically no longer be able to receive UC. But I'm sure people will find a way to abuse the system like always
