It's a meme from reddit and I suspect they started it because the wife of Mike Pence is named Karen. It started around the time when Pence was nominated, but I could be wrong or remember it wrong of course.

I dont think it's anything to do with Pence. It evolved from the "ladies with this haircut always want to talk to a manager" memes. It was funny at first, but it seems anything funny eventually turns sour once it proliferates. I remember the first time I laughed at "white people" punchlines way back when it started and nowadays you have a huge portion of the population legit thinks it's ok to hate on white people based on too basic an understanding of history.
