Just open anyways. They have no right to tell you that you can not open anyways. Here where I'm at in SC they told Beauty and Barber shops to close. They did for like a week but most have gone back to work even though the governor here still says they are closed.

RunningBuffalo 57 points ago +57 / -0

This is the answer, OP. Call up your customers and see if any of them are willing to come in for a trim "while the store is closed". Keep the big CLOSED sign in the window but leave the door open anyway. That way your customers feel safe (and maybe a little like they're getting concierge service), nobody hassles you, and you make money.

Honestly, a haircut is probably the first thing I'll do when things open up here. I'm so shaggy and feel so gross.

That is what I did.Only I called my barber and stopped by his house.Useally cost 20$ I "lost "40 while I was there.

BeMyFren 27 points ago +28 / -1

Absolutely do this. If you have solid regulars, I'm sure they're wanting a haircut pretty bad right now.

Post a large note on your door saying something about your constitutional rights and that if anyone tries to assert authority to make you close down that they will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Even if they step foot on your property.

Just the text of the 14th Amendment will be fine along with title 242 Section 18 that makes it a Federal crime for them to do this.

MaxineWaters4Prez 26 points ago +26 / -0

Yes. Open. You're at a fork in the road.

On the left you sit closed, going broke, torn up by stress and anxieties, possibly ending up homeless.

On the right you open up, and maybe you'll get closed, but maybe you'll just quietly earn your living again.

Or maybe contact the people you see regularly and offer they come by your place, or you go to them.

This whole situation is a fucking shame and disgrace. Everyone should open the fuck up and those scared or genuinely susceptible to ill effects of this virus put your PPE on and stay in the fucking house!!!!!!

I know this is going to sound like a joke, but this is what I told a friend of mine who runs a salon to do: Get some educational books (educational booksellers are allowed to operate in most states) and put them on a rack at the front of your shop. You are now a bookseller who just happens to give haircuts. If you open up you're going to get business. Many people out there desperate for a haircut.

43
MaxineWaters4Prez 43 points ago +43 / -0

Lol grab a Costco box of Hershey bars and advertise "free haircut with purchase of candy bar: $20". You're selling food, now you're essential.

We will always hear about a government employee's struggle with a week long shutdown,

We got to spread the news - we can be sure that the media will never tell about the real suffering they caused.

15
Conservativechick 15 points ago +15 / -0

Such a great point - they just put sob story after sob story of those poor government employees (who then get paid for their time off.)

9
HuggableBear 9 points ago +9 / -0

The next time a government shutdown is being threatened and we get sob stories, we need to hammer the everloving shit out of them with ridicule about how we got shutdown for two fucking months and we managed to survive

I'm so defeated now. RIP pride.

You are a good man. What you're going through makes me sad and angry, but how you are navigating this is both impressive and inspiring. Your family must be proud that you are the head of their household. Men like you make America a country worthy of our pride. You know you always have our shoulders to cry on & ears to listen when you need to off-load. Make sure to do what you need to keep your head clear and heart light. You are doing right by yourself, but more importantly, you're doing right by your family. You are a good man, fam. Matthew 11:29-30, "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

There are two programs, one by the state and one the feds are offering through the CARES act. The pandemic relief portion of the cares act will pay self-employed/independent contractors $600/WK regardless of your individual states pay (or lack thereof). The problem, which I’m having since I’m self-employed/independent contractor, is that the state doesn’t even have a way to apply if you’re that type of worker. Their system won’t allow it, but one can’t qualify for the federal portion without applying through their individual state. It’s bullshit!

The fed has said that payments to these workers will be retroactive, and since my governor has had us forced at home for over a month, I expect to be paid for every week I’ve been prevented from working. However, I fully expect the money to be exhausted by the time my piece of shit state figures out how to allow the self-employed to apply and have their application properly forwarded to the fed side.

Also, I feel no sense of my pride being hurt by doing everything I can to get this money. I’ve paid an incredible amount of taxes my entire life, and I’ve had no income for over a month because an authoritative state government would not allow me to work after they defined me as “non-essential.” No one should feel any amount of shame for applying for these compensation programs, we are all actually owed much, much more than what these “provide.” Good luck

ETA: have you tried getting a forbearance on any type of debt you might have (mortgage, car loan, etc...)? The only reason I’m not having a major meltdown is because my mortgage and auto lenders both gave me a 3 month forbearance on payments, and the missed payments are added to the end of the original term.

  1. I would stop listening to anyone that isn’t your lender, call them and ask what’s available. Lenders do not want to take houses or vehicles from people, there are way too many people that would be in default right now if lenders weren’t working with them. During normal economic times lenders aren’t going to really work with anyone outside of very drastic situations, but everyone is impacted right now so they’re pretty much forced to work with people or 50% of their portfolio will default.

  2. you need to follow up with the labor and industry arm of your state regarding steps for federal pandemic relief. I don’t know what the process is after applying with the state because my state doesn’t even have a way for the self-employed to apply yet.

9
psybrnaut 9 points ago +9 / -0

I called both my car payments and got 90 day forbearance, they still charge interest but it's added to the end. Payments resume as normal in July. Same with student loans, got 90 days no payments bc of covid shutdown. Lenders understand bc it's everyone right now.

Stop paying the school. Like now. You can talk to them about it and probably deal with it in the fall. No wasted dollars.

I hear ya pede and I'm with ya! That pride is a tough thing to swallow and damnit hold your head high, you have never asked for a handout, you built it on your own! This is not your fault.

This is the government's doing, so they can send you some help. Do NOT think you have failed or that you are in any way comparable to low lifes who lay around and mooch off of welfare. This is a strange scenario and we all gotta get by. Your pride isn't shattered, friend. Just bruised. Muscle on.

This is happening to all of us,brother. God bless you and damnit I salute you as a man for showing strength to your wife and kid, for taking pride in your work and breadwinning. Shouldering it alone. That's the most honorable damn thing a good man can do.

BUT you gotta talk to some fellow pedes and buds for some pick me up for yourself too.

Don't beat yourself up, your name ain't Juicy Smollet.

HuggableBear 7 points ago +7 / -0

No one should feel any amount of shame for applying for these compensation programs

These programs aren't welfare and they're not a social safety net. These programs are eminent domain compensation.

The government took your livelihood without your permission. You are entitled to compensation for that, just as you are entitled to compensation if they take your house to build a new interstate.

Print a copy of the constitution and stick it in your window and re-open. If you are near Vermont I will gladly let you cut my hair tomorrow. I own a small business that supports 4 people and I could care less since day one if I was "ESSENTIAL" or not in the opinion of the governer. It is essential to 4 people surviving. I have been open every day since the corona nonsense started 3 weeks ago. Just open and people will be at your doorstop tomorrow looking for haircuts.

Otherwise advertise appointments on Facebook and have people come in one at a time. Hope you got your Trump Bux and that they help a bit.

Here's what the barbers in my town did: They put up Closed signed and just left the lights on and the doors unlocked. If someone come in, they cut their hair. If police come by (so far they haven't) the plan to claim they are just doing inventory (place empty) or "cutting a friend's hair" (we're all friends in times like these).

Some have also put big signs in their windows with their cell phone numbers. Then they run a speakeasy barbershop either out of their home, or sometimes they come to wherever you are and cut in your home (what, 90% of cuts just need scissors and a trimmer).

I know some beauty salons that are outright defying bans on the grounds they consider themselves an essential service because they perform "hygienic treatments" like hair washing and nail "cleaning" and "eye protection" (lashes and brow shaping).

Obviously I'm not in your shoes and it would be irresponsible for me to say stand up to the bullies, defy the law, etc etc because I don't know the situation of how likely it is someone would make an example of you. But I feel if you don't out of your way to try and rub defiance in the face of the authorities then I really don't see people going out of their way to persecute you. Just give enough plausible denial that police can look the other way.

Regarding financial aid, go to lawyers.com and search for a social services lawyer. There's a lot of them that offer free initial consultations. These people are experts and knowing the magic words you need to use when you apply. Honest people answer questions honestly and get denied, while unscrupulous slobs get thousand of dollars a month because they have friends and relatives telling them what to say. You don't have to lie, but you should really get an expert to tell you how to paint the bleakest picture possible. They can even tell you sometimes how to appeal and bypass waiting periods. There are always loopholes, but sadly most people who don't try to make a living off welfare will never know them.

This is creating a black market of self employed people, like barbers, plumbers, etc., who are working, who need to work even though the local government put a padlock on their door.

This is the section of law to use. Frankly, we should class action against the State governments and the CDC. This deprivation of rights should not, and cannot stand if we want to remain a free society.

We have a nation wide deprivation of rights an there needs to be a reckoning.

3

This just proves that they want people on welfare so that they can control them by withholding it. Do not feel defeated, you tested their system and you were proven right: it's a control mechanism

Hang in there and when you come back do not forget that they would let you starve

3

Hey man. I'm kinda in the same boat, but there is money out there for you

From what you say, you are eligible for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance: https://www.uc.pa.gov/COVID-19/CARES-Act/Pages/PUA-FAQs.aspx

There is absolutely no shame in getting any money due to you. You have done nothing wrong. All this money is just printed out of air anyway, so take whatever you legally can, because everyone else will.

Don't open up - none of the people telling you to open up are opening up their stores - they have nothing to lose, but you do. Your first duty is to your family - you don't need fines or jail time. If you are going to protest, do it legally. In the meantime, take your money and feed your family. It's really okay - you are exactly the person this money is for.

Call your local city hall. Ask about who runs the applications and see if they can put you through. Sounds like some retarded application fuck up that got you rejected. If you want to link the site I would be willing to look and see if I can track down contact infoo for you.

Also contact the SMALL BUSINESS BUREAU for the CARES act. That is the FEDERAL program to help self employed folks. The loans are super low interest and if used on PAYCHECKS they will TURN INTO GRANTS! https://www.sba.gov/funding-programs/loans/coronavirus-relief-options

Your state has a program and the Federales have a program too.

Otherwise you just start selling a gun in the store and people just happen to walk in and get their haircut whilst checking out the gun on sale. It is an essential service though.

The $2+ trillion stimulus bill does provide unemployment benefits for the self employed but it needs to be kept track of separate from regular unemployment. States seam to be dragging their feet setting up separate unemployment for self employed systems. Here in PA the system just went online today but it's plagued with glitches.

Just search: "unemployment for the self employed in {your state}" and you should get news articles telling you what's going on. There's millions of us so they're writing articles about it.

This is a shitty situation, i have been in a place where I was losing absolutely everything and saw no way out of it, a time or 2 as well.

An option that may be available is to go to your local grocery store and ask what you can do to help. Tell them you are available for work to help get through this. Food places are hiring in my area, maybe they are doing the same where your at. While the wages are not going to be anywhere near enough to make up for your place of business, but it will take some of the pressure off.

You should be able to apply for the PPP loan as a contractor/self-employed. The pool of money will likely be refilled. Most banks have been assured of this - even with the political posturing. Hopefully your bank is an SBA lender, but if not, go to BOA or Wells Fargo (seem to be processing a bunch of them) and apply. You'll have to jump through a few hoops, but you should get your money.
