How does adding funds to these institutions (some of which are very questionable, i.e. Academy of Art University - $3.79million ) meet that charge. That is the point I believe the writer was trying to make.
Columbia's increase in tuition is inconsequential to the story.
its context. the only purpose of those 3 bottom numbers is to paint them as the rich evil bad guys that don't deserve our tax dollars.
its not hard to use correct numbers to make somebody seem a rich evil bad guy. no need to exaggerate or extrapolate. Why not just say their 19-20 tuition is $61k, which was 15% higher than their 18-19 tuition? That would have been correct and still made them seem like greedy jerks.
When you include 1 fake number, all the rest become more suspicious, and motives become suspect. Better to just use real numbers in the first place.
