No more should government aid the 4th estate than should the republican party bail out the democrat party. These things just can't happen.
If Trump were to even consider this, as nonsensical as it is, he would be accused of trying to bribe them for better press.
The WaPo has Bezos who (is) was the richest man in the world. The NY Times has Carlos Slim. Why on earth should government bail out journalism? The constitution says the government cannot interfere with the press. In aiding them this would be tacit interference. The big media conglomerates own a lot of the local TV, radio, and print publications around the US.
As much as the press is protected from the government the constitution protects "we the people" from journalism by not allowing any form of interference, good or bad, because the only true balance adjustment that "we the people" can make is to not support them. If they get propped up by the government then "we the people" truly are powerless. It is bad enough that they are supported by some of the richest people in the world to pander their agenda.
The individuals in government have their right to speak their mind which is covered by the constitution, but as a governing body they can't act any more than they can act against the 2nd amendment.
This brings me to the fact that if they can license gun owners they can license the press. The individual members of the press can still speak their mind.
