Oh yeah, probably quite a bit. I think much of whatever leaves China is still going to go to other S.E. Asian countries. An unfortunate state of affairs, cheap labor, so big companies who’ve been manufacturing in China, I don’t see a whole lot coming back, instead moving to Vietnam, India, Indonesia etc. I truly hope I’m wrong, and a small number of manufacturing will return for sure, but most I think the big companies are just going to spread their risk around and still take advantage of the cheap labor. Until the ‘developing’ countries are on a level playing field, we’re not gonna see the economic boom in manufacturing that we should. Again, I pray that I’m wrong.
Fair enough, and this might run against the grain a little here, but I’m totally fine with fair trade between US and SE Asia. In fact, that’s what I do for living. We import products from SE Asia that cannot be produced here because it’s a natural product that simply doesnt grow in mass quantities here. As long as it’s fair trade, I love my suppliers and making their day by placing a big order, then paying a couple handfuls of friends (aka co-workers) to re-pack and sell. The key is not exploiting other human beings to work for a nickel on the dollar. Otherwise, having a competitive advantage is fine and I’m all for working with the hard working folks in Asia. I’ve never worked directly with anyone in the Philippines but have with many in Indonesia and even a couple small companies in China and they’re very honest, upfront, and overall nice people who IME love the USA and do whatever possible to service their clientele. As much as I’d love for many manufacturing jobs to return, I just don’t see it for the time being. But fair trade is good for all involved, and not exploiting otherwise nice folks just because their Communist government makes slaves out of the citizens. Hell, for what good the Dow is, with all this going on and oil prices decaying rapidly, it took a big hit today and is STILL somehow over 23k off from 29k but we were down to what little under 19k a few weeks ago? So many variables that go into that, but I think a big component is investors trust Trump’s leadership. Along those same lines, I like to go by Predictit instead of fake polls. When people put their money on something it’s more likely to be right, vs some dumb poll with a horrible sample.
