Honestly, I heard (finance books) that for the top-pf-the-cream portion of the H1B engineers, the pay relative to living in New York etc, and conditions for working isn't even that good. It's not a viable gig for life or even semi-long term.
As large portion of India is still Caste-y and arranged marriage is a big thing, some (interviewee admitted) India guy wanted his tech company to write him up as "Manager" with no pay increase so he'll impress the parents of young woman looking at that matchmaking "Catalogue" back in India........ And he can get the hell otta here after he cliched his girl as some USA-Tech Company manager.
I worked with a team of H1Bs. They made between $110k and $135k in a city where the average salary was $50k. They considered themselves underpaid compared to American citizens.
They were all very smart and good at their jobs. However, they still considered themselves slaves because they were restricted in where they could work. If they lost their jobs, they only had 2 weeks to find a new one before they had to leave the country.
It’s a mixed bag, but the ones I knew were qualified.
