It’s because they think anything relevant in the world can only be found in places where the population is at least 1 million.

They go to other big cities and think they’re well travelled and cultured when all big cities are extremely similar compared to the diversity you get in the actual country.

Source: have been to many large cities in the US and several in Europe.
