Guess what? People die. Every damn day. From all sorts of routine activities, like driving a car, or traveling by bus, train or plane. They die from falling as they get out of the shower or tub, or by setting their houses on fire inadvertently. Many die from drug abuse. They forget about safety on the job. All tragic, but we don't reorder society because of it. OK, we can pass common sense safety regulations, with which I agree, but we don't shut down the global economy because of it.
People can die from years of bad habits (as I sit here sipping my bourbon dipping some Skoal) because they make rational decisions--OK, maybe not so rational, if I have another bourbon--about risk vs. reward. I'm 53. I'm going to die of something, someday. I could give up every pleasure and vice and still get run over by a truck tomorrow. Bourbon and dip may not be the healthiest lifestyle, but I work out 5X or 6X per week, don't smoke, wear my seatbelt, and eat my fruits and vegetables. The point is, my lifestyle is my choice. And when I die, even if it was accelerated by those choices, I will accept that as my personal responsibility.
My mom smoked from age 16 to age 80, until she got Alzheimers and forgot she smoked. She's 84 now. I'm absolutely certain smoking gave her immense satisfaction for those 64 years. She drank a lot, and enjoyed that too.
Yeah, she may still get lung cancer from smoking all those years, or cancer related to alcohol, and either one may kill her. She has mild COPD, so she is at high risk from any respiratory infection, not just COVID-19. At her age and health, just about anything could kill her. Ascetic monks living on mountains die too....
Since when is it government's job to protect us from death? Since when can ANY political leader, party, or governmental program "prevent death."
We have all lost our collective minds. SMDH
Edit: I don't blame GEOTUS for saying this--he has to! He is backed into a corner; either he's the pro-death, anti-science President who is ignoring Fauci and Birx, or he is the one who will be blamed for overreacting, and shutting down our economy--that's the next pivot. He can't win, so he tried to call their bluff with an all-out response. It's the petty power being exercised by every Dem Governor or local official I am calling out here, with their pious virtue-signaling. Just to be clear, I support our President 100%.
Edit #2: Concern trolls here are saying GEOTUS' guidelines are akin to a national lockdown order. As far as I know, the only quarantine President Trump implemented was for suspected SICK people returning to the United States.
Democratic state Governors implemented "Stay at Home Orders," not our President. There was never a national "Stay at Home" order. After Inslee and Newsom, they fell like dominoes, because the political cost to them to resist the hysteria was too great. Now watch which states open up first...
This tide of "prevent just one death" virtue signaling bullshit washed over our country as a concerted attempt to wreck our amazing economy, and GEOTUS' inevitable landslide reelection.
Confusing a Presidential "Guideline" with an "Order" from a Governor, Mayor, or county official is weak-minded.
They've likely prevented vastly more automotive related deaths than virus related deaths with this lockdown.
Better not tell them or we'll never be allowed to drive again. /s
Of course they dont care about those casualties because they can't be politically weaponized.
Social media in my area is already about 1/4 "isn't this great, the air's already cleaner and so many cars are off the road" posts, followed up by "we really should be ticketing anyone in their cars for anything non-essential" comments, followed by a couple "they had the right idea in Wuhan - this lockdown is fake" entries.
