I did a cruise in the Persian Gulf in the mid 90s. We once sailed through a cluster of sea snakes. I'm talking about writhing all over each other on the surface of the water, covering an area the size of a dozen football fields. they were so jam packed together that you could have walked on top of them. It was really creepy.
I guess what I'm saying is there are things in the Persian Gulf way more scary than sharks.

Yeah, pretty close to hell, that's for sure. One time we were sailing and we had to shut down all the Aircon/refrigeration on the ship because the water was too hot to cool the condensers. One of the refrigeration engineers told me it was over 100F..Luckily that only lasted a few hours.

When I was in the Navy, Iran pulled alongside my cruiser in what I assume was their version of a destroyer/cutter. General Quarters were sounded and we all thought it was happening. 5 minutes later the Captain comes over the 1MC asking all hands not currently on watch topside to show them what America is made of. We go topside and the ship has the 5 inch guns pointed at the Iranian vessel. We were met topside by most of the Chiefs Mess flipping them off, mooning them, I'm pretty sure a few bros even pulled out their meat! They peeled off quickly thereafter and shut the fuck up!

America's navy is kind of trash. We let attacks on ships like the USS Liberty go unpunished.
Don't underestimate the swarming tactics that Iran would use. The lines of demarcation there don't always allow enemies to be seen from miles off, easy picking for a modern destroyer. US and allied ships sometimes have to casually coast a mile or two from Iranian water. A swarm of Iranian gun boats, armed with enough rockets and fanatic sailors, would eventually land some hits.
Our military doesn't maintain it's edge by downplaying every threat.
