It doesn't work that way though. The US guarantees open shipping lanes. If not for us, you would see fights over critical areas where oil or other goods need to travel through.

Look at this map. Say you abandon that area. Now SA and Iran fight over the strait and who gets to control ships leaving the gulf.

It's not like the US is the big bad and if you removed us then everything would be swell. You remove us and then Iran or SA take our place in that area, and then your oil supply is dictated by them. Part of the reason we got involved in the Middle East in the first place is because the leaders in that region used oil supply/prices to hold the Western world hostage.

The very reason we have a Strategic Oil Reserve (which Trump just refilled) is because OPEC decided to stop selling us oil over their dumb Jew hatred. They tried to destroy Israel, and because the US supported the country, they decided to mess with our oil supply in order to put pressure on us. None of this is market driven, it's political.

It would be nice if we could just be friendly and mind our own business, but that is a fantasy. The reason we created the US Navy originally is because African Muslims were harassing our trade ships and enslaving Europeans. Some things never change.

But we are.energy independent now. Why should we forfeit our soldiers lives for foreign interests?

The energy independence is great for us right now, but it's temporary. I'm not sure what the answer is in the future, but being at the mercy of the Middle East cartels isn't great either. Ideally we'd find some new energy resource to replace oil, and then forget about the sand people.
