Houston is okay. It's like the gay mecca of the South and is pretty liberal, has giant sex shops prominently displayed on street corners, is extremely hot and humid, and is a cement jungle.
On the other hand, most of the people (locals who have been here a while) are really good folks, and there's a lot to do. It's conversely really religious, with several big churches and one of the largest Catholic communities in the USA.
It's a weird place and I'm not super fond of it, but I'd take it over Seattle or LA. I'm also just not a big city person so your mileage may vary.
If you move to Houston-area, move into Montgomery County (north of Houston). It's essentially the Orange County of the Reagan era of Texas.
