My daughter is 200 or so miles off-shore in a deep water drill rig & currently has a shift schedule that is 12 to 13 hours long EVERY DAY for 4 straight weeks...
The Petroleum industry pays a decent wage and that is what is expected - she knew it going in and is damn-skippy happy to have the work (many thousands laid off with the crap oil market). She'll be ready to come off the rig, but after a few weeks of down-time is usually looking forward to going back out.
Granted they cook all meals for you 24x7 and the "gym" is only a level or so away.

We used to want to work some of that...not all hells no but some... and other times you are restoring a facility after a disaster or other event requiring some ownership of the job, some commitment to restoring a hospital or plant.
That's how you get ahead, save money, grow your plans, Do for your kids.

I've worked 70 hour work week. It is NOT sustainable. That is why no one does it. A competent IT person can work between 40 and 60 hours, but not regularly, otherwise they complain, because generally they are salaried and exempt from overtime. There is NO IT UNION in america that I know of. I'm an IT person, and if there is one, well dammit none of my coworkers ever told me about it. Maybe I'm a cuck. Or maybe I'm right.

There ought to be because companies burn the candle at both ends with competent IT staff. They keep demanding more and more from them, with this stupid threat of outsourcing to India. And then you remind them that YOU are HERE to fix the garbage code that they got FROM INDIA a decade ago, that they are still dealing with. And you say, "GO ahead. You fuck. Go ahead and outsource to romania. You'll fuck shit up, you'll look like the laughingstock know-nothing (esp not how to code) seagull mgr that you are, you'll fuck this company to hell, and all your IT staff will leave for some place that treats them better. THen you'll have these millenial know nothigns with shiny college degrees in computer science that translates into JACK FUCKIN' SHIT when it comes to programming (if you are a coder, you get what I'm talking about, esp if you are full stack or devops coder who understands to a good degree code/server security)..... and then your company will be fucked not for 3 yrs but for 12..... And then you look for a better job, and you find one and then you leave. Because our society doesn't know how to respect people who work IT. Even a great IT person is NOT going to work for 70 hrs salaried unless they are paid like 200k a year. Because 70 hrs a week is working 2 jobs

I set my limit at 62 hours a week, give or take. And that;s pretty much my normal hours.
