Most income taxes in any given country were first applied as a war measure and were told it would be temporary.

4th Amendment Patriot Act post 9/11. We are not currently under a terrorist attack, yet we are being meta data gathered and all communications are being collected. This has persisted even with various courts declaring it unconstitutional.

How bout (NY specific) the S.A.F.E. Act which restricted firearm possession which was passed in an emergency session by Gov. Cuomo post Sandy Hook shooting.

Thank you! I'm blue in the face yelling about how the 4th was just completely nullified by 9/11.

2nd is gasping for air and the 1st is being eviscerated by big tech.

The Great Depression. That's pretty much why we ended up with the welfare state and the massive expansion of the Fed. Once you create a government program, it's almost impossible to get rid of it. Leftwingers won't like this example because they love all the New Deal stuff, but that's because they're stupid. It's pretty pointless to try and reason through this stuff with them.

The Patriot Act? It was a colossal fucking of our rights and it’s still there.

Patriot Act, first and foremost of all (from 3 separate national emergencies declared by Bush 43 in September, 2001; all still current).

Then, Google the list of national emergencies declared over the last 60 years, and match up the major pieces of legislation with them.

Then there's this one: 1934 - Great Depression and the attempted assassination of FDR in 1933 (The Great Depression, while not a declared national emergency, would have been declared so today) gave us the 1934 National Firearms Act (ceded the 2nd Amendment).

The declared national emergency "Declaration of National Bank Holiday" in 1933 was the basis for much of the New Deal, which moved us solidly toward socialism, and eroded our rights across the board. It was finally terminated in 1978...long after the Great Depression was over.

Hmmm...the Jews in Nazi Germany. In the beginning, they thought Hitler and the Nazis were just bloviating.

That did not end well.

Apparently they have no concern at several politicians stating things like: "This a tremendous opportunity to restructure things to our vision" or "‘My Lord. Look at what is possible. Look at the institutional changes we can make."

Social security and Medicare/Medicaid. FDR said they would be temporary safety nets. Yet here we are almost 100 years later with them.

Patriot act can/has infringed on a number of constitutional rights. 911 was a national emergency.

Any time the romans were invited to participate in a war... they just would not leave. Look at their takeover of Greece

Pennsylvania instituted a temporary alcohol tax to help rebuild the city of Johnstown after a devastating flood in 1889.

It's still there.

Open the USA up. This not the NEW normal. We are Americans. We work. If we don't work who is going to pay taxes to pay for the illegals and people on welfare? The government money comes from TAX PAYERS,

So I think what is most deflating here is that I'm trying to convince people that I know, love and are by all accounts smart. It's just incredibly difficult to separate people from the narrative. The fear campaign has just been too effective. I'm at wits end.

This just occurred to me... from Wikipedia, “ In the aftermath of the revolution, hijab was made compulsory in stages.[106] In 1979, Ayatollah Khomeini announced that women should observe Islamic dress code,[106][126] his statement sparked demonstrations which were met by government assurances that the statement was only a recommendation.[106][126] Hijab was subsequently made mandatory in government and public offices in 1980, and in 1983 it became mandatory for all women (including non-Muslims and non-citizens).[106]”

There are 2 I can think of. Cincinnatus and Washington. And no one believed either would actually do it. Both are glorified BECAUSE they're the exceptions.

Giving up freedoms has happened in many societies.

I can’t give specifics, because those societies do not have history books anymore.

At least ones not authorized by the Government...
