Simple answer, because the people let them. The Constitution is just a scrap of paper. It has no magical ability to hold tyranny at bay. Only the strength of will of a free people willing to risk it all can secure liberty, and only a continuous show of that strength of will can keep it.

Too many people were raised under the misconception that there was something special and different about America such that they didn't have to continue to stand guard against the sinister encroachment of authoritarianism that inevitably erodes the rights of all free nations. They thought we enjoyed a "set it and forget it" government, and all they had to do was show up to vote every four years, and no one would ever dare attempt to get around the plain language Constitutional restrictions to government.

That complacency has for generations allowed the slow and steady transformation of our government into an oligarchy of self aggrandizing busybodies whose sole interest is in forcing their opinions on how individuals should live their lives down everyone's throats.

The armed part is easy, this becomes difficult when the entire legal system will come at you with the fury of 1000 suns meanwhile the police commit blatant murder on video and get a fucking paid vacation.

Great Question! They don't, except when people are brainwashed into thinking they do because of "caring", or something...
