The iPhone does select a calendar based on your locality. But, it only does so when you first start the phone and select your country/region. However, it doesn't change after that.

If they want to have a selection called "World Religious Holidays" and put it in there, that's fine, but putting it under "US Holidays" is horse shit. They have Earth Day listed there as well.

Apple put this shit in their iCal years ago (all sorts of non US holiday crap). I found a way to remove it, but it wasn't easy.
It's really easy to do it.
Go to your Calendar app, and click on Calendars at the bottom.
Next to US Holidays, tap the colored circle with the checkmark, and turn it off. That removes the default US Holidays calendar.
Now, you probably want a US holiday calendar without the extra junk? That's the next step. Go to this URL:

Click the Subscribe link, and it should import the calendar into your phone, and keep it updated each year.

Settings->General->Language & Region->Region
