The iPhone does select a calendar based on your locality. But, it only does so when you first start the phone and select your country/region. However, it doesn't change after that.
United States is just one of the many choices that are available at setup, or now. If you choose another region, it should change to a calendar for that region.

Yeah it gives you such a relevant calendar based on your us location. Fuck aapl/msft/facebox et al.

Settings->General->Language & Region->Region
