As someone who watched some spy tv/fiction, I think not only are some spy excellent at faking it (e.g. lying/tears/hyperventiling with a sincere expression, or clever "disguises" like p0rn addiction that makes other fellow ground staff thinks he has shucked into some corner to check p0rn on his mobile yet again when he has disappeared to do his bugging stuff. )
And occasionally "good" spies that lasted 20 years with you developed actual relationship to you, and sometimes do things that genuinely care for you. Making the whole farce very real as the spies keeps lying to himself on both sides. The said spy may be as torn as the MC on *Departed *but that's not the concern here.
