In the USA, if you delete or destroy the evidence in a civil trial, it is supposed to be assumed that you did it because it was damning to your side.

What's irritating is the way people seem to get away with destroying evidence is by ordering someone else to do it, chalk it up to a miscommunication or glitch, and suddenly it was just an accident with no one at fault.
