That's basically what happened to the Republican party - it was rebuilt in his populist nationalist image and any of those that didn't want to get on board (eg Ryan, flake, corker) were shown the door. When dubya and hw criticized Trump, the base lashed out at the Bushes swiftly and ferociously (I honestly think the shock of it contributed to the elder bushes demise). The Republican party is Trump's party now
