I get that you were fantasizing, but these parameters suggest replacing real understanding of the democrat party agenda with baseless optimism that they are patriots at heart who "want the same things we want but just have a different way of getting there" (ghod, what horseshit).
These are not good Americans who are able to think critically and reason rationally—and would want to—like a normal sane person.
I respect your disagreement, and would normally join you. But, I think the Democrat party is beyond redemption. It is so far gone, there's almost no possibility of turning back.
The situation is similar to the Whigs. Their feckless response to slavery led to members abandoning the Whigs and joining the newly formed Republican Party.
Unless a new leader can emerge and remake the Democrats like Trump has remade the Republican Party, I expect a new party to emerge, leaving the remnants of the Democrats to join with the Greens.
The turning point will be when labor unions abandon the Democrats. If they lose that constituency, only the communists will remain, and that's not enough for a viable party.
